So Beckham is most likely not coming back to the Galaxy. I'm of two minds on this. ESPN's Page 2 currently has an interesting article about voting for your favorite athletes by number. For the number 10 here are the results:
10) Who was the best player to wear No. 10?
62.1% Pele
10.1% Guy Lafleur
9.5% Chipper Jones
8.4% Walt Frazier
6.8% Fran Tarkenton
3.2% Diego Maradona
Now tell me, when DB came over, he was supposed to be an ambassador for this sport - like Pele OBVIOUSLY was (the 70's was a golden age for the NFL was it not? I'd say he did an amazing job).
I would say for Beckham, mission not accomplished. And also, thanks for telling the world we have a second tier league, when you came over in the first place to help shed that image.
I'm just reacting of course, I have been watching Becks since he was number 14 for Manchester (before 10 OR 7). And I understand that he is a player first and foremost - I can't say I blame him. But still. I'm a little angry over this in a way.
I partly blame MLS for using the hero formula for a team game. I partly blame Beckham for not knowing what he was getting into. I tisk at AC Milan (who I am a huge fan of as well) for being typical PR-Savvy and sneaky Italians.
Looks like Donovan may be gone too - but I take solace in knowing an American MLS product is performing in Europe. Either way, the Galaxy looks like morons.
At the end of all this rant, I just want to reiterate that the Crew is the best team in the league - because we have truly passionate fans supporting a mostly "organically" (developed players from the draft) assembled team. MLS should take notes and quit chasing names.
Unless Henry wants to come over when he's released from Barca this summer. ;)
