Cask Ale in Columbus?!?! That’s right! Barley’s Smokehouse and Brewpub on Dublin Road is hosting the 8th Annual Mini Real Ale Fest on May 22nd from 11 AM - 3 PM.
You might be asking yourself what is cask ale? Cask ale, also known as real ale is brewed from traditional ingredients and is allowed to mature naturally. Cask ale is unfiltered, unpasteurized beer which contains live yeasts which develops a gentle, natural carbonation. The beer is alive and changes flavor every day as it conditions in the cask. Cask ale is also served without any extraneous gas which is the traditional way of brewing and serving beer.
You may be asking yourself if there is a true difference between cask conditioned ale compared to draught beer. If you were to sample a chilly, high effervescent draught of an IPA (example: Stone, Avery, Bells) alongside the same beer from a cask, you’ll find that the cask ale’s flavors are mellower, with the astringent bitterness made smooth.
While America’s embrace of real ale might seem new and novel, in many respects it's merely an embrace of the country’s brewing past. At the turn of the 20th century, beer was cask ale by default. There was little refrigeration and everything was served from wooden casks.
Cask ales are living things and like anything alive with yeasts and cultures, they can turn foul if past their prime or not handled correctly. Lucky for Columbus and Ohio craft beer drinking residents, Barleys has been hosting a real ale festival for the past 8 years which allows craft beer drinkers to taste freshly tapped cask ales!!!
Breweries which will be represented at the festival include:
