Just some thoughts about "recurring characters".
On the whole, recurring characters permeate all our entertainment. Look at television...soaps, series (remember Seinfeld?), late night shows. Look at books and how many of them are serials. Movies, like the Star Wars Saga and Harry Potter. Wildly successful all, because we are drawn to the characters.
People like recurring characters.
It's the same for sketch comedy. Sure, the characters are caricatures and the stories outlandish. That is the point. We love poking fun at our world. It helps alleviate the pain of all the negative happenings. Yes, we all know there are hillbillies in the world...Beverly Hillbillies was a very popular show. And today we have comedians like Larry the Cable Guy, who is himself a recurring character; and Jeff Foxworthy who uses recurring comedy...You Might Be a Redneck.
Going deeper, all of us are recurring characters in our own lives, and that may be the biggest reason we latch onto them in our entertainment. We do not become completely different personas in every facet of our lives. Our personalities represent us, and recurring characters give us a platform to live vicariously, change something about ourselves, or just plain laugh at ourselves.
Peace.
