Ahhh...another fine mess I've gotten myself into. For starters (pun intended) fuck you, and you, and you, and you, and you...and you (i.e. future posts).
As usual, I stand alone. If I complained about something and someone asked me what "it" was I would not say "something." I would mention "it" or I never would have complained in the first place. Crying wolf to me means creating false alarm. There is no useful information being conveyed in any of these posts. I am baffled how I am the only one who sees it this way.
I re-read all of drews posts. Along with the misleading title "Bad Situation with Auto Mechanic" (leading one to believe that drew will share who the mechanic is - I mean why would you post a non-descript and vague situation - it does no one any good!). It is exactly what drew stated though: a bad situation with a mechanic! You insinuated that you were at wit's end with bad customer service and something to be revealed was worth reading. Since none of us has seen the car, even our speculation is worthless. There is no useful information being conveyed. At all.
In summary your contribution to this community-based website wherein people rely on helping each other so far is...
Drew:
"Ummm...so I have a car problem, does anyone know how to fix it without having seen it?, I am so steamed at the local mechanic for hanging up on me and telling me he didn't care (btw: you may also go to him someday), well let's just wait n' see, now the problem might get fixed though, Whew! close call...ummm...well thanks for your interest and the advice."
Everyone else but me:
"You sound like such a swell guy. Although I haven't seen the car it may be "this". Gee, that local mechanic sounds like a real jerk! I hope I don't unluckily drive into his shop someday. I hope he doesn't hang up on me someday if I am on the phone with him. I hope he treats me better if I bring my car to his shop someday."
Do you not see why this thread is fucking meaningless? This is why I was insistent with at least giving us the name. If he was the only mechanic in town I could maybe understand not upsetting him. But this? So what if they are reading this board, so what if they know its you? My guess is if they don't have right shop tools they aren't scouring the web for slights in their freetime either. And it already sounds like you probably won't get a Christmas card from them anyway.
First though, lets go with what we know. The president of said mystery shop intentionally hung up on customer, customer also reiterated the shop "didn't care" about his repeated requests for satisfaction. This is the irksome thing (see your quote), not their services nor their diagnosis (which sounds like they spent considerable time on).
You have mentioned your apprehension to name the shop multiple times. Why? How many times do you need to be hung up on to be insulted? Your apprehension in mentioning the shop suggests something about your personality or discourse with the shop that caused the shop owner to become frustrated with you specifically and hang up on you. Did you reflect on what caused that guy to hang up on me? What could you have or done that caused that atypical business-owner behavior contradictory to both your own past experience and consensus (i.e. Angie's List). He doesn't like to see your car taking up unbillable man-hours and garage space either. This stuff never happens to me though, so whad'do I know.
Secondly, The price of getting the car back is $450. So there is a spread of free (zero dollars with old starter/additional labor + possible shorted-out car/pre-existing condition) or paying $450 (and getting a new Audi starter if their diagnosis indeed turns out to be partially correct + possible shorted-out car/pre-existing condition). Personally, I would have just taken the second option. $450 to walk out of an import shop with a new OEM part to boot? Il'z take it. You are sort of starting from scratch this way. Do you see even why this is a good deal?
I can understand your frustration with going from car that runs to car that doesn't run. Maybe, the re-starting problem wasn't caused by mystery shop maybe you caused it by push-starting or who knows why? (see now I'm speculating, geez!). MAG aint' cheap if the problem was not caused by the mystery shop. I doubt they will end up eating the MAG bill (at least at rates they charge the public). However, if it is your fault, you will end up paying MAG's retail. My guess is that in the end you will pay a premium for the mystery shop's work plus MAG's additional time and labor. Pure speculation.
It won't do me any good whether you name the shop. I don't have an import but was speaking up for others that do (I'm swell like that) and may unknowingly go to the mystery shop. Maybe you can save this thread by letting others know exactly what was wrong with the car and how it got fixed. At least that may be useful information to someone...umm...someday.
@groundrules
Maybe you are right. I think I am done here.
Best all.
Now that was a long goodbye! lol
