A couple we know is expecting a baby girl soon, and my wife and I were horrified by their ideas for names. These are so bad: Riley or Bristol(!?!)
It's obviously their choice, and we didn't say anything about it, but should we try to save the baby from being saddled with a terrible name? I'm most concerned about Bristol - why would anyone want their kid saddled with a Sarah Palin trendlet?

Those names are not nearly as bad as they could be.
I was riding the number 10 homes one time after work and this ghetto ass girl was in the back of the bus talking very loud. I could not help but over hear her say "when I have my baby I going to name it clinique or chlamydia".
I would take Bristol over that hot mess anyday. lol

Usually when one parent likes a bad baby name, the other will reel them in. Or name the dog that before the kid is born. But that system is breaking down, I fear!
Maybe they were Repeating the sketch I can only hope.
I think it is safe to say that people can get crazy naming kids I know someone with a kid named Journey. Yea after the band

Riley is not a weird name. It's a good Irish name. Been on my list for years.
It's a last name, not a first name. And weirder for a girl, I think. I hate when you can't tell whether a person is male or female from looking at their first name - Dear Sir or Madam? I'm getting pretty good at figuring it out, except Chinese names.

The second worst name is "I think Riley is a last name and not a first name."
Edit: p.s. Connor, Conrad, Craig, Dillon, Donovan, Garvin, Henry, Joyce, Kelly, Leonard, Nolan, Patrick, Russell, Ryan, Shay, Sullivan, Tobin. And that's just me lazily scanning through Wikipedia's list of popular Irish surnames. The Irish seem to have a traditional thing about basing surnames on given names, and vice versa.

Yes, my lineage has a lot of given names based on maternal surnames.
Joev - I'm just saying that what you think of as a terrible name may have significance or relevance to their family. Names are personal. I wouldn't trade mine for a minute even though no one ever says it right. I loved not being Ashley #1, Jennifer #5 or Courtney #3 growing up. But I also didn't get to have any of those awesome tourist license plate thingys on family vacations.
I guess I never realized people thought about or had such an emotional response to baby names of other kids.

I know that neither name has any significance for them, and I guess that's why I dislike both choices. And I could live with Riley, even though I don't like it personally. But Bristol is such a mistake. A little girl named after an industrial port in the UK? Or after Sarah Palin's trampy daughter?

Yeah, I wouldn't choose it, but I also don't think Bristol Palin will be relevant in 5 or 6 years. That chick barely has US Weekly staying power :)
