Does anyone have any experience with auto detailing? Specifically the finish on my car is cloudy on half of the car (the other half was repainted a couple of years ago after an accident).
Does anyone know, would a good detailing job repair the finish? If so, can anyone recommend a detailer?
I also have a couple of rust spots on in areas like the window supports, and I'd like to get them fixed as well, but not sure where to go for something like that...

you can probably polish the finish. look for a product called "Elbow Grease", it's hard to find and costly when you do, but that should work for ya! :wink:
ok, really, look for "glare polish", it really does a great job of reversing sun damaged paint . you'll probably have to order it online. it's time consuming but fairly easy to apply. (it's easeir than waxing)
for the window you might see a body shop, or just sand with some very fine paper or fine steel wool and then repaint with a rust preventative like Por-15 and others.
really depends on the car, if you are doing a restoration of a classic, or just trying to keep the cancer at bay.

also, there is a detailer at the corner of Pontiac St and Weber Rd. i hear really great things, even people driving in from Pickerington and Canal Winchester to go there. it isn't in the best neighborhood, but that's probably where I'd take my car for a detail if I was ever to take a car in to have something done that I could easily do myself. (things like this will happen when I win the lottery)

Thanks for the suggestion... I really appreciate the advice.
I would consider doing it myself, but this is one of those projects that seems to have a ratio of time x tediousness x expense, and the exterior is pretty bad. I suspect that with the right tools and products, the finish could be repaired pretty effectively and efficiently, but I don't have those tools or products By the time I buy all that stuff, and arrange for a place to work on the car, and spend a lot of my free time working on it, I might as well just have had someone with the proper equipment do the work for me.

I've got a couple of cars I am looking to sell in the near future, and want to get them shiny and newish looking before posting. i don't need the most impressive level of detailing, just a quality job at a decent price.

I've used this guy a couple of times. He was able to get a significant amount of paint off my bumper. The last time I went he charged $100 and did a great job.

the original place I was talking about closed. there's now a used tire store is in it's place, and they just added detailing I heard. it's not the same people now.

If you want to do it yourself here's a great thread on how to do everything from washing your car properly, claying it, polishing it and waxing. May be overkill, but who knows.

Try going to http://www.autopia.org (new website is horrid), but it is a nice website for detailing.
Really the only ones I know of in Columbus are:
http://www.esotericdetail.com/ (his work is absolutely amazing; check out his Autopia write-ups)
and
http://www.andyzainodetail.com/ (I think he details for Auto Assets and their cars present well and are clean)
However, I have never used any detailer on my cars. I do all the work myself or have my Grandfather machine polish out the car when it is needed. And I do in betweens with a Porter-Cable Random Orbit Polisher (very light duty work).

Well, I can tell you from following the detailing community for over five years it will cost a lot for a good correction. A bad detailer will absolutely destroy your paint leaving some nice swirl marks and buffer trails. And a good detailer is always far cheaper than painting your car (and I am not talking a Maaco job).
This is one of the areas where you get what you pay for. And detailing is not quick! It takes almost a full day to polish out a car correctly and really get it nice and top notch.
