One of the reasons for the unrest in Egypt is higher food prices. A decline in grain or rice production, globally, plus an increase in oil prices makes for very interesting times. Americans may not face famine but changing climate or geological events (think massive volcanic eruptions) would certainly reduce our food supply. We could repeat the "Dust Bowl" of the 1930's (mostly a man-made disaster). As for Australia, one of my relatives picked this week to vacation there. Ouch!

My dad was born in Townsville and lived all over Australia while he was growing up. We have tons of relatives in and around Queensland. It's nerve-wracking to watch what they're going through. It's kind of like Australia's Katrina.
It's pretty incredible, really, when you consider that there were tremendously distructive wildfires in Melbourne just a few years ago. I saw the aftermath first-hand. It was terribly sad.
I guess it's true that Australia is a country of extreme weather.
