So I've reached the end of the line with Sprint and my current phone. I want to get the new iphone, but was hoping to do it with Verizon but that will not be an option until early next yr if at all. My concern is AT&T's coverage around Columbus. I travel as well, but the majority of my time is spent around urban areas and inside the 270 loop of Cbus. SOooooooooo - short version of this question is, what issues do people have with their iphones in terms of reception in Central Ohio? Is coverage better than I realize? Any thoughts on this are appreciated - thanks.

I get fair reception... Notably better if when I have 1 or 2 bars I turn my phone off and on again. It renegotiates towers when you do that. I do occasionally have dropped calls, but i talk on the phone very little.
I guess it depends on how important voice calling is to you. If i used my phone for business it might be an issue. I just don't to voice much, so i don't have much to complain about. You can always bail and get a verizon phone when they come out if you can tolerate the eraly termination fee- that's probably the route ill take when/if there is a non-ATT version of the device.

I've had my iPhone for a couple years and really don't have any issues with it. My area is limited to the far south end, west side and grandview/arlington area. So, a call may get dropped now and again, but sometimes its the other person's service. My sister travels alot with Verizon and she seems to have more issues than me. I will say ATT doesn't work in Hocking Hills area, where I have my cabin rental business (although I was promised they'd have it years ago) so I have a line on my sisters verizon account for the times I'm down there.
But for the iPhone I LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE it. I've used the mapping program a zillion times due to the fact that I tend to be directionally challenged. And there are some way cool apps that make it simply a great toy. I use it like a computer for my job with the calendar, email, etc all designed so well for a visual person like me. If I hadn't just gotten a new phone a few months ago, I'd be first in line for the new version. But, I'm saving my dough for an iPad soon.Posted 1 year ago # -
RE: new phone a few months ago. For some reason iPhones retain their value and you can get quite alot out of a used one.
I would recommend an iPhone. You'll love it. I do believe there will be a verizon version within 6 months at most, but AT&T hasn't been as horrible for me as some might have you think.

I have not figured out why folks hate on ATT - I switched from Verizon to ATT 2 years ago and I've not noticed a significant difference in terms of coverage, dropped calls, etc. I think Verizon has done a very good job of convincing people that there is a significant difference.

as far as Ohio and AT&T goes, just don't plan on having any coverage on the stretch of 1-75 between Lima and Toledo. I have no idea why this remains a void. Otherwise, I have an i-phone and AT&T coverage for work and I travel Ohio and a 5-state area and haven't noticed too much of an issue with outright lack of coverage. From what I can get, the issue isn't that AT&T downright sucks, it's just that it could be much better (i.e. larger 3g coverage, costumer service, etc...)

Actually no issues anywhere I've been, to be honest. If anything I get better reception in the the high rise I work in (Huntington building) than I did with Verizon.

I was also thinking about getting an (I phone) here soon when my renewal comes up.
I use to have Sprint and it sucked. So I switched to AT&T and have been with them for about six years. I like them a lot and I have never had issue with their customer service.
My only complaint is I barley get reception in my house usually one bar. It’s not the provider because everyone that visits has the same thing happen. It’s really strange
But my boyfriend suggested that maybe something is grounded incorrectly within my house and it could be causing interference. Anyone think that sounds possible?Posted 1 year ago # -
I'll echo the comments on the iPhone itself--brilliant, intuitive and at the risk of sounding dramatic I can't think of another piece of technology that I've purchased that's made my life easier than the iPhone. I switched from Verizon during nursing school last summer when I saw all the clinical tools I could use with the iPhone. I switched for the iPhone, not for AT&T.
As for AT&T coverage, I've not seen an issue with mine in urban areas. I've only ever had issues inside Lowes stores for some reason--maybe whatever they're constructed from, I dunno.
Good luck in your decision--there's no shortage of opinion on the matter. ;o)

I've had an iPhone and AT&T service ever since I dropped Verizon when the first iPhone hit the market. I've never regretted the switch. I've owned each iPhone (first generation, 3G, & 3GS), and can easily say it's the best phone I've ever owned and I wouldn't give it up for anything.
I've also traveled extensively with my iPhone and AT&T, and have had great service in major cities. When you're out in the boonies things can get a little hairy sometimes, nothing major though.
Get one, you won't look back.

AT&T/iPhone user here. I really don't have any coverage problems in Columbus.

Anne & I both made the switch from Sprint to AT&T/iPhone in September. I haven't really noticed anything overly poor about the AT&T service compared to Sprint. The occasional dropped call and the occasional incoming call going straight to voicemail without ringing. Nothing that didn't happen from time to time with Sprint.
That being said, I agree with Mike said in the first response... depends on how much you value your phone/calling service in your handheld device. I use my iPhone regularly for email, texting, contact management, calendar/schedule management, internet access, social networking, gaming, music, news, photo camera, video camera, audio recording for interviews, and an alarm clock. Being able to make calls with it is just one feature. If you're getting value out of it in a dozen other ways, then it makes it a bit more tolerable to shrug off 1 or 2 dropped calls per month.

I preordered the iPhone 4. I'm switching from Sprint. I was leery of the reception issue, but then concluded that making phone calls is what I do the least on a cell phone anyway. I'm relieved to see the reception issues don't seem to be as great as advertised. Six more days...

I get good reception in Columbus in most areas with ATT.
However, the bottom floor of my friends place in Clintonville gets little or no service so I have to walk outside to use the phone.
I travel north to Cleveland and the surrounding areas and I do not get the best reception in upper North East Ohio. I also loose 3G on many sections of 71 N to Cleveland.
ATT has a APP for the iPhone where you can submit problem spots to them right on the phone, it sends them the coordinates of your location. (But reporting no service on a phone with no service can be hard)

Go South on Nelson from Broad and your phone call will drop with the quickness, that giant stone wall or something, bam gone.

I thought it was all deliveries but maybe they are sending them out as they have them.

My understanding is that was for preorders made after Tuesday, when they ran out of available stock. I haven't received anything changing the delivery date, but I should check on it to be sure.
ETA: My Order Status just says "Processing".

That would be fucked. I pre-ordered Tuesday like a good boy.
