Last Saturday for November's Gallery Hop Stained Skin Fine Art Gallery opened it's doors for the annual installation of the Blacklight Art show. This show is the only of it's kind in the city and always offers a great variety of artwork, mediums, and spectators. The ultra high contrast work of UV reactive paintings changes the feeling of the tradition gallery setting into a very vibrant and lively setting. The works in this show included several different mediums including paintings, custom art toys, sculpture, clothing, and installation work. DJ drastic helped keep the energy and mood of the show going with a great nonstop blend of acid jazz, hip hop, and instrumentals all night long. The Installation piece was a 18 foot glowing dragon that was a collaboration between artists Anthony Dubois, Cyrus Fire, and Coreroc. Over 40 pieces were involved in this show featuring work by local artists: Lisa Dubois, Anthony Dubois, Cyrus Fire, Coreroc, Ben DeVoe, Naryan Cloudy, Andy Raison, Phil Robertson, Gabriel Mendez, Alex Vasquez, Tim Phelps, Amy Shepard, Booga, , and several others. The flow of traffic and support was amazing for this show and it truly helps define the "Lowbrow" art scene here in Columbus. Lowbrow is a widespread populist art movement with origins in the underground comix world, punk music, hot-rod street culture, and other California subcultures. It is also often known by the name pop surrealism. This genre of art has been able to flurish in the Indie art scene of the Capital City with the help of galleries and spaces like Rivet, Junctionview Studios, Madlab, Gallery upstairs, Artful Dodger, and Stained Skin. The thing that really helps the efforts of these spaces is the fact that this genre of artwork is selling to our community. Not only are lowbrow art show a reality, but first time collectors are now able to afford original artwork and within a genre that they understand and appreciate. This bond between artist and collector and imperative for any genre to succed in a city. So for all the people that know what lowbrow is and follow the culture locally thnaks for your support. You make all of our work in the studio pay off and for those that are interested I highly suggest you check out the above listed venues for upcomming shows. You may also feel free to send me an email at coreroc@gmail.com and I will add you to my mailing list for upcomming shows in the Columbus Area. I also highly encourage any artist to consider working on a piece for next years annual blacklight show at Stained Skin Fine art Gallery and Tattoo.
