WAVERLY, Ohio - A Lucasville woman is scheduled to be arraigned today in the hit-skip death of a Michigan physician who was struck while riding his bicycle in Pike County.
Sara Bender, 35, recently was indicted for leaving the scene of a fatal accident, said Pike County Prosecutor Robert Junk.
She is accused of striking and killing William Crowley, 57, of Northville, Mich., while he rode his bicycle along Rt. 23 during the Tour of the Scioto River Valley on May 11.

I don't understand legaleese very well.. Is she being charged with leaving a scene of an accident or vehicular manslaughter? I like how these things are called "accidents" :(
Also has there been any news on the motorists that killed the cyclist on Alum Creek last week?

I should know better than to take your bait. But are you suggesting that the woman hit the cyclist intentionally?

Thanks for posting this, as I had missed seeing it in the news.
Does the prosecutor not think he can get a greater charge to stick? Interesting. I wonder if the doctors family is also pursuing a civil case of some kind. Dunno if 'wrongful death' is a possible suit in a case like this.

Not sure of the legal classification, but this is a tragedy that is happening too often around here (our state). I think this issue deserves statewide attention. Not just here in Columbus. We have to do something to ensure that drivers and riders are acknowledging each other and traveling safely. I do not believe the woman would have intentionally hit the rider. I hope that is the case. Both families deserve our prayers.

According to Wikipedia:
Vehicular manslaughter is a kind of misdemeanor manslaughter, which holds persons liable for any death which occurs because of criminal negligence, or a violation of traffic safety laws. A common use of the vehicular manslaughter laws involves prosecution for a death caused by driving under the influence (determined by excessive blood alcohol content levels set by individual states), although an independent infraction (such as driving with a suspended driver's license), or negligence, is usually also required.

No, I do not think that she hit this person intentionally. And please don't suggest that I am baiting you. I am concerned though about the possibility of motorists getting away with killing someone simply because "they did not see them" or "well its a busy road anyway, the biker should have known better.'
We have become so complacent with the death and injuries from motor vehicles. If everybody carried guns on them, would we be more complacent about accidental shootings? Motor vehicles have their place and are useful (hell I directly use one about once a month), but have we just accepted their negativities without any serious critique?
Some 40,000 to 42,000 Americans are killed by motor vehicles a year in the USA... that's a Vietnam War (only counting GI fatalities) every 16 months. Where are the protests? Why the complacency?

Geez, it's not *that* hard to read and it's good practice.
Besides, it shows the different requirements for proving VM and VH specifically for Ohio as opposed to, say, what some unknown guy on 'teh intertrons' interpreted a broad generalization of the subject nation wide.
You're right though, it looks pretty hard to prove in a case like this. :(

Transportation engineers and law enforcement officials now use the term 'crash' to describe what were formerly referred to as car 'accidents.' Sometimes car conflicts are called 'collisions,' but only in the MSM are they called 'accidents.' I wish the Dispatch would update its style manual.
