I divorced my car, to borrow a phrase from Katie Alvord. And some day--who knows when--- I may end up estranged from my refrigerator when I finally get around to canning and pressure cooking.
Yet ---perhaps ironically---the more I eat food I’ve grown or someone else local has grown the more dependent I am on the natural- gas-burning stove in the house I rent.
Maybe I can organize a group based on sharing a community stove and oven. Maybe I could prepare oatmeal cold, using water and a mortar and pestle. But I'm not sure how well that would digest.
Or maybe I can cook it---lentils, kidney beans, and amaranth too---in a cast-iron cauldron over fires in my backyard !
Perhaps cooked food is over-rated. We only THINK it tastes better , having been corrupted by the social conditioning of civilization! Animals don't cook their food, perhaps we shouldn't either !
Those of you who eat critters likely know about cerviche, prepared with citrus juices, and Sushi, (even though the rice is cooked.)
And there are lettuces, carrots, broccoli, and celery to enjoy uncooked. But how about potatoes ?
Anyone out there who’s divorced their stove or at least cheating on it on a regular basis with a solar oven or by cooking over a fire ?
Instead of blowing up mountains, how about a stationary bike that powers your microwave oven ? The sky is falling. Let’s innovate to prop it up, if only for a little while longer !
