Are kids getting dumber?

At least 82 youths in the US have died from a "choking game", according to the first official tally of such fatalities.
In the so-called game, a leash or rope is wrapped around the neck to temporarily cut the blood supply to the brain. The goal is a dreamlike, floating-in-space feeling when blood rushes back into the brain. Up to 20% of teenagers and pre-teens play the game, sometimes in groups, according to some estimates based on local studies. But nearly all the deaths were of those who played alone, according to the count compiled by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Really, you never did this as a kid? There was a name for it. 7 seconds in heaven or was that the kissing game? I don't know. Anyway, we didn't use a rope someone else just used their hands and you stood with your back against the wall. Once we found pot and booze it was no longer necessary, although I'm pretty sure a few boozy nights in HS still probably led to this. Luckily, we never died.
Aside from this, yes, I think kids are getting dumber :)

I'm not saying kids aren't getting dumber, but that particular practice has been around at least since my childhood and probably much longer. I never played, but I remember hearing about it, and there's periodically a news story about the new deaths that take place from it. I also remember my middle school classmates playing a tamer version involving pressing on each other's windpipes until they passed out briefly --I always thought it was idiotic!

I played the Atari 5200, which would normally made me a "not cool" kid because it would have been too nerdly for the other little boys on the block.
However, at that time, my family lived in a largely Asian suburb of Philadelphia, so I was a "not cool" kid because I wasn't nerdly enough. :lol:
(Everyone wanted to go over to the kids' houses where they had the NES, not my big hulking dinosaur.)
P.S. To answer the question: No, kids aren't getting dumber. We mature, dignified, level-headed citizens of the 21st century are just getting smarter. :wink:

I heard of this, but it seemed that it was mostly kids who were 12-14 when I was 18. I never did it. my friends didn't do it. I don't do it now.
but yeah, I think kids are getting dumber as well.

I knew kids who played at suffocation when I was in middle school, as well as playing punching games or burning games or X pain inflicting games or getting high off of chemicals or markers or whatever...
Kids have always done stupid things and always will, it's called natural selection. :roll:

Now, don't get me wrong, we did "6 inch punch" and a game where we'd line up our forearms and put a lit cigarette in the middle until someone pulled away...but nothing that could KILL us for god's sake!!!

I suspect that people on average need a certain amount of risk or danger in their lives... especially at that age. Kids are so protected and insulated from just about everything, maybe they intentionally look more for thrills, like extreme sports or, um, asphyxiation?
