I need to get an independent arborist, or someone of similar qualifications, who can inspect a tree in my yard and certify that it is healthy.
The city of UA has asked me to remove the tree, which has a split in the trunk but is otherwise perfectly green/healthy/about 40 feet tall, at my own cost. I do not want to remove the tree for aesthetic reasons, in addition to the fact that it will cost several hundred dollars to have a tree company come out and safely bring it down piece-by-piece.
City code requires homeowners to remove damaged or dangerous trees at their own cost, and I wouldn't have a problem with doing so, however expensive, if the tree were dying or posed a danger to pedestrians/property.
If you have someone you can recommend, or advice for what to do in this situation, please let me know. I'd imagine my best course of action would be to have an expert certify the tree as healthy (if that is indeed the case!) and present a letter from the expert to the city along with a polite letter explaining that I obtained a second opinion in the interest of preserving the greenspace/old-growth trees in the neighborhood.
