APRIL Clean-up Challenge Month

April 1st is this Tuesday. That means it's time for the third "Groupsourced Resolution" which is (drumroll please)... the Columbus Clean-Up Challenge. My thinking is that if you get into these challenges, then you will start doing it all year long. If not, then when the next month starts there is a new topic to focus on.

Although it wasn't technically in April, this Saturday was a great kick-off to this month's challenge- the combo CU/CB (ColumbusUnderground.com and ConsiderBiking.org) cleanup of the I-670 bike path... I believe they plan to have 2 more of these events, so stay tuned.
If you do only one clean-up thing this month, have it be Earth Day. It is Saturday April 26th. There are other events going on throughout the week as well. Go ahead and register as a volunteer for one of the morning events. (Early registration encouraged!) Or come out to the afternoon party at Goodale and get informed by touring the booths, then get some food and drink and check out the bands...

I picked up some stray trash yesterday by the Riffe Center. :)
Tonight I helped an old lady cross the street! I didn't realize that was something people actually needed to do these days! :) not really cleanup related, but I just wanted to share that.

oh yeah and i cleaned and repainted my studio. that's a very small section of columbus actually it may officially be grandview, but i'm counting it.

The interesting thing about this is how many of the regulars on Columbus Underground and other local blogs are already doing all of these "challenges" as a part of their normal routine. BTW- I think that is fantastic.
We really do have a great subset of Columbus who frequent this online space. I may not post that often but I really appreciate being a little part of this too.

For the record, whenever I say Columbus I mean metro Columbus, like the whole region. So Grandview totally counts.
Kudos to you all (stray trash and Earth Day signing up)...
And don't these "challenges" totally kick the typical "New Years Resolutions" in the butt?

Volunteers Come Together To Clean Shorelines Throughout May
(Columbus) Families, schools, churches, neighborhood organizations and local businesses are encouraged to Ã¢â‚¬Å“hit the streamsÃ¢â‚¬Â as volunteers during May for the cityÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s seventh annual Central Ohio River Pride Month. The Columbus Department of Public Utilities-sponsored events offer more ways for volunteers to Ã¢â‚¬Å“get greenÃ¢â‚¬Â and help clean up our waterways.
Ã¢â‚¬Å“I hate litter and other garbage that pollute our rivers and streams and bring blight to green spaces along our waterways,Ã¢â‚¬Â said Mayor Michael B. Coleman. Ã¢â‚¬Å“ThatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s why IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m so proud of all the community volunteers who step up and pitch in. We need everyone to do their part to make Columbus and central Ohio greener.Ã¢â‚¬Â
Litter and other debris collect along waterways as winter snow melts and early spring rains carry trash to river banks.
Ã¢â‚¬Å“This spring clean up will not only beautify Columbus, but will also ensure that our streams and sewer systems are working properly to handle the large amount of rainfall we typically get this time of year,Ã¢â‚¬Â said Utilities Committee Chair Andrew J. Ginther.

Ã‚Â§ The Friends of the Lower Olentangy Watershed will provide training for interested Olentangy River volunteer stream monitors on May 29 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Please call 267-3386 for more details.

Volunteers are also needed for the cityÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Ã¢â‚¬Å“No Dumping, Drains To RiversÃ¢â‚¬Â storm drain marking project from April through October. Call 645-2123 for an information packet or visit http://www.utilities.columbus.gov.
Another way residents can help protect their local waterways is by disposing of household hazardous waste properly. Contact the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio for information at 871-5100 or visit http://www.swaco.org.
