One of the biggest problems with KLD is misperceptions about the area. Are we going to pretend that Old north or Italian village doesn’t have its share of crime (remember the burglary ring that is still going on). But we look past that as an isolated occurrence because we have a better opinion those communities. It doesn’t help anyone living in KLD to trash the neighborhood. There are a lot of good people who are trying really hard to improve that neighborhood. The safety issue is getting better and the more young middle class residents rent and own property in the area the more crime will dissipate. So as this community struggles to make it back to what it used to be, can we stop putting up extra barriers to their success?

... good luck in North campus too (lots of crime, noise and bugs) ... If utilities are included another tip off that place probably is not to code and substandard i.e North Campus jungle ...WTF? I don't know where you live, but I'm sure that by the standard of someone it is a real shithole too.

No one is putting up barriers, just being realistic. the area may one day be great, but it is an area in transition. the full transition has not happened yet. to fool people into thinking it is better than it actually is in order to lure them there would be misleading.

And if you look at the last 3 months 32 homicides occurred in Columbus guess how many were in KLD? None.
Im not saying this area is wisteria lane but lets not distort an already negative perception of the neighborhood.

I'm not sure a SWF is completely safe anywhere - but know North campus is not optimal either. Unfortunately, these are some great apartments, with a good location and views. They also value priced, b/c they know folks are skeptical about the immediate neighborhood. The reality is for a couple of guys or girls or students, who are living together that to bike to school and rely on public transit this might be a pretty good place. Regarding (gang comments) have your heard of the SN Posse and seen all the graffiti - not sure anyplace is safe, but know the gang activity is being driven out and much, much less than 2 years ago - it has moved way out East and out West (TRUE)Not to further derail, but really? So, white girls aren't safe anywhere, meaning what... they should stay home with moms and pops until such time a nice man can safely escort them out into the world? But girls that aren't white - they're OK on their own?
I understand being pro-place-where-you-live - I'm that way as well. But to deny there is a problem with crime in a place where we ALL know there's a real issue, including gangs, is purposefully ignorant and misleading.

lifeliberty I'm all for being realistic but I just think that steering people away from a community is also misleading. I think its actually illegal to do it if your a Realtor. I would have no problem saying that a community is in transition but I cringe when I hear "you will get shot in the neck if you move there" (paraphrasing). Am I asking too much?

I think the best database of crimes is -http://www.crimereports.com/map/index/?search=Columbus+OH - it covers all the various kinds of crime, which can be a better indicator of the health of a neighborhood. However, the website is jacking my ancient work computer up to no end...

Parts of NOBO are great, other parts not so much. Perception is an issue, I've had people from this bb refuse to rent from me in HV because of the reputation of the "South Side", but I feel safer here in HV by far than when I lived on campus where: someone tried to break into my neighbor's home while she there and she was screaming at him that she was calling the cops, a gentleman exposed himself to me on the street, and my car got broken into and walked on. Just choose carefully with open eyes. Sawyer Towers, no, but near Broad St where Chris Sunami and his wife and kids live, sure.

Thanks SusanB! I think you summed it up better than I ever could.

If I wouldn't live in an area, I'll tell you so. I would hope to get the same respect from others.

@DavidF - Someone said this in the other thread, but when I was apt. hunting, by far the best locations & values found were by driving/hiking around my target neighborhood. There are still folks out in the world that only put up signs...
Other than that, I've seen some neighborhood association websites will having rental listings. Ya never know.Yeah I found two of my best apartments that way. Unfortunately my work schedule, and my upcoming trip to Houston are impacting my ability to just drive around. But believe me, I'm looking when I can.

It's been a few years since I've looked for an apartment, so I don't know if this is still good advice, but I've had good luck in the past with the classified ads in The Booster for whatever neighborhood I wanted to live in.

Its amazing how many folks "perceive" a neighborhood as dangerous. Most urban neighborhoods are block by block. As an "owner" of a rental in campus and south clintonville for 15 years - from experience it ain't all roses over there based on real life not blogs or student anecdotes - people should be open minded and evaluate each apt, street and location rather than Broad brush - IMHO North of Mt Vernon (SKYVIEW) has a ways to good (but might be good for some people. Best values are south of Long - new apts and still reasononable and nice apts for people who desire to be close (5 minutes) and on a budget and on Broad Street from Parsons to Franklin Park has some way cool apt buildings and digs - cool architecture, good location and cheap

We have a 2-3 BR house with large yard for rent in Weinland Park (east of High St. between Italian Village and South Campus). All above discussions of neighborhood "safety" are relevant - our block is good, most of our street is lovely, and the location is mind-bogglingly convenient, but many people are too nervous to live here. That's why you get our house (1400 sq. ft., brand new Ikea kitchen, brand new bathroom with ceramic tile, etc.) for $800/mo.

found a place. Thanks all for the info and feel free to continue the derailment :)
But to add my contribution....I work for a cable company, and my days are spent in many different neighbourhoods. I don't think I've really seen a completely 'bad' neighbourhood, just certain sections of certain areas. Seems that no matter where you are in and around the city, you're always no more than 5 minutes from a 'nice' spot
Although, saying that...I don't think i've ever seen a prostitute in Worthington or Clintonville :)

Wow NOBOPatriot - you've turned into pure Spam Sammiches.Yeah. MattEllis (who originally started this thread) specified Clintonville, Short North Vic. Village. I really don't see any reason to suggest something outside of his parameters.
