I'm in the process of writing up a will and trying to get all my affairs nice and tidy -- for that day 110 years from now when I kick the bucket -- and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with the process of donating a body to a medical school.
I've checked off all the "donate all my organs" boxes on the drivers license, and am in process of preparing a Living Will to lay out my final health care instructions for my sister, who will be my executrix.
But I'd like to make sure all the details of what to do with *me* are lined up. I'd like to donate my body, as all my grandparents did, and as my father plans to do. He made arrangements with the University of Cincinnati in which they basically handle everything. They will pick his body up from the mortuary/coroner's. (Not sure if it has to go to a mortician first, by law.) They will store his body, and they will be responsible for cremating either the remaining cadaver or the entire body, if he's deemed unsuitable. Depending on what the family wants, they will either return the cremains, or inter them in a plot they have at Spring Grove. Essentially, they'll handle everything but putting a bow on the body.
By contrast, a friend of mine has made arrangements to "donate" his body to OSU. I use the quotation marks because they require that he make all the transporation and 'disposal' arrangements with their preferred funeral home -- and that he pay for them now. He's already paid about $800 to the funeral home, which really steps up the level of his 'medical gift'.
Has anyone else made these kind of arrangements? Is it unusual that two state schools should have such different procedures in place? Any recommendations on where to go for more information.
There's no reason to think I'll need to activate this plan any time in the near future -- but I'd like to have a plan, just in case.
TIA
