Okay, have kept a Wii game out of the house long enough and looking to get one so the kids dont get too stir crazy this winter. My question is that the few times that I have played it I have only seen sports games or Mario type games. My kids love them, me not so much. I grew up with the Atari games, I need some sort of space game, shoot em up thing. Is anyone familiar with a Wii game that is like that they can recommend? The kids cant have all the fun!

speed racer for the wii is pretty awesome. Target has it for 15 bucks too

+1 on the Virtual Console Games for classic shmups. They've got a lot of the greats from the 8-bit and 16-bit era... Gradius, R-Type, Galaga, Life Force... all in the $5-$8 range to purchase & download.
There's also the "WiiWare" games that are new games for purchase & download. I've not played any of the shmups on there, but here's a few that look fun:

Also, always worth checking out the "best of all time" list on Metacritic if you're looking for a solid list of reviews/scores for games that you're not too familiar with:
