Because it seems like they'll publish anything, even stuff from people like me who have very poor writing skills and write lame jokes. 8)

I agree that letter was bullshit.

That letter was right on the money, Walker!
Did you read the one in today's paper?
Hey, these are the folk I warned ya about.
Made me shudder. I could feel the hatred just reading the words.
Never want to meet a guy like this on the street.
Scary.

Another smoking ban thread? Really? I thought we were done with this after the issues were voted in the ol' democratic process.

I was starting up a "Letters to the Dispatch" thread. I can't help it if it gets off topic.

We should start a new Columbus Smoking Forum section since everyone likes to talk about it so much!

I had a letter published in the Life section of the Dispatch a couple years ago. They had mixed up Sinclair Lewis and Upton Sinclair, so I sent in a pedantic letter correcting them and they printed it.
My biggest Letter to the Editor score was getting a fairly lengthy letter published in the Toronto Globe & Mail, which is kind of like Canada's version of the New York Times. It was something about music.

Letter in Dispatch:
"And turn that whine into something that has some real meaning. Like better fitness, better eating habits, a cleaner environment, better education, creation of real jobs, more community involvement and lots more. Like the health and betterment of your own children."
Holy crap! I had always assumed that all smokers ate poorly, don't exercise, and are impediments to education and job growth - now I see that I was right! Feels so good to have my prejudices confirmed!

I had a "Letter to the Editor" published a couple years ago. It concerned how a youth baseball team was banished from a local league because they were too good and none of the other coaches wanted to play them.

Yeah that letter was one of the most chilling ones I ever read on the current PC sanctioned prejudice. Going to see all the enabled loonies coming out of the woodwork, now.
(I like your avatar and mellotrons, too, BTW.)

Alcohol-smoking comparison invalid
Thursday, November 30, 2006
In his Friday letter, Walker Evans insincerely thanked Ohio voters for passage of State Issue 5 ( "Smoke Free Ohio") by saying he can now go out to a bar and slowly poison his liver with alcohol while keeping his lungs, "squeaky clean and free from smoke."
If Evans chooses, he can go out to a bar and poison his liver with alcohol. Or, Evans can choose to go out to a bar, imbibe a nonalcoholic beverage and spare his liver the assault.
His choice stands, regardless of the type of beverage fellow bar patrons have chosen. The same isn’t true for tobacco smoke.
If smokers are expelling carcinogens into the air around me, my lungs suffer contamination against my will. Until such time as Evans is forced to drink alcohol in public places as I’ve been forced to breathe smoke-filled air in public places, he cannot draw a valid parallel between the right to smoke and the right to drink in public places.

I get schooled here all the time. What are you talking about?
I'm just a moderator. I'm not the "overlord of all opinions ever" or anything.

Yeah but there is no instant comeback on the dispatch.

I actually have two letters to the editor that were combined into one article that is going to be in the december issue of Columbus Monthly. I am interested to see how they spin or not my idea. I honestly think they will make me look like a douche bag, but I guess we will have to see.

Yeah, man, you did get slammed down. :(
She's right, though. You were comparing apples to oranges and trying to draw a direct comparison.
