Getting a piano, from 1st floor to first floor move.
anyone have experience either moving a piano or hiring movers?
tips, recommendations?
if recommending then if you remember what the price of the move was type it with your answer.
also, reputable piano tuners if you know of any.

Those bastards are heavy as hell, and DeVoe's is currently sitting in my living room because we couldn't move it anywhere else.

The only piano moving experience I've got is with an upright piano. Don't let them fool you, they mean business.
We had 5 fairly big guys and it took everything we had to get that thing into and out of a pickup truck bed, then into someone's living room. They're crazy heavy.

I've moved a piano a few times in my day - I mean, paid someone else to do it. The last time, we used Columbus Piano Movers - they are in the phone book. Keep in mind they charge extra for everything that even remotely resembles a stair (even an inch), you have to count practically every step from the street to the piano, and add $10 for each step to whatever the base price is. I would plan on spending around $250ish, even if you are on the "first" floor.

They were really great.
+1 on Davis Piano Moving. They moved our piano from Sunbury to Clintonville, I think it was around $75 or $80? Well worth it though, I wouldn't dream of trying to move a piano myself. They're heavy and sensitive, too much room for something to go horribly horribly wrong. The guys with Davis were on time, nice, careful and fast fast fast! From the time they pulled into the drive to the time I was alone and plunking out Fur Elise was less than 5 minutes.

Well, it ended up being $350, but that's fine with me. The Uhaul rental alone would have cost $150 and a precious weekend day. We hired a company out of Canton/Akron area, who makes several runs (with multiple pianos) down to Columbus a month. They're holding the piano until temperatures get above freezing so as not to damage it.
Davis Piano Moving quoted $500 - because they don't usually have multiple piano shipments between here and there.

I remember a piano moving company in Boston with a very effective advertising strategy: They drove big black trucks with the company name, "Death Wish Piano Movers," in big white letters on the side. Sooner or later, if you mention the name to a handful of people, someone with experience will say, "Yeah, you'd have to have a death wish to try to move one of those goddamn things."
