Am I the only one trying to replace the niche once filled by Mahan gallery? Usually feels like Columbus is dominated by thick, pallet-knifed paintings with ultra glossy varnishes. Or fuzzy still lives. What are some places people like these days?

What's missed more? Mahan or Capt. Cream Cheese?

Merge and open a Capt. Mahan Cream Cheese Gallery.
But I'm probably still recommending a flight to NYC to see great art.

83 is the best gallery now...
Captain Cream Cheese left?

We should make a cartoon painting about that. Locals will eat it up.

http://www.moma.org/interactives/exhibitions/2010/abexny/MoMA is funded by too many corporations for me. That's dirty money.

Rebecca Ibel. Less warm-n-fuzzy, but worth the effort because her aesthetic is unlike what's shown elsewhere in Columbus.
Probably because so little of it was made in Columbus...or by people in Columbus...or even people who have ever visited Columbus.
ETA: Rebecca's thing is hers to do with as she pleases, but I don't think its a comparison of similar things.

Art that I like is more real and arty than art you like.
The art gallery you like isn't as real and arty as my favorite gallery.

Yeah, Captain Cream Cheese closed in June. But I agree -- I miss it too! (I think it would be a perfect pairing with the new Brezel site in North Market)

ETA: Rebecca's thing is hers to do with as she pleases, but I don't think its a comparison of similar things.I think this attitude is provincial and an example of why someone might appropriately suggest going to NYC if you want to see good art. The quality of the art scene in Columbus is retarded by people who only want to support art/galleries as some kind of local food analogue. Art is a national (and increasingly international) cultural conversation.
Jacquie did not only show Columbus artists, and the OP did not ask for places to see work by Columbus artists. Rebecca Ibel does in fact represent several Columbus artists - she just ALSO represents artists from other places. You can like her aesthetic or not, but rejecting it because it's not "Columbus-rooted" enough is silly.

Really glad I didn't do that then.

Ibel is okay. I like Keny gallery and hammond harkins but they aren't really a part of the gallery hop. I didn't mention that earlier, but that's when I really noticed the void. Unfortunately most people in Columbus probably like it turning into more of a pub crawl lol
