I'm never sure what kind of response I will get when I reveal the fact that I love brutal music. I also dig local alternative and the bands I see all over this board. However, who else likes bands like 5FDP (Five Finger Death Punch), Clutch, Atreyu, BLS and the like. I'm always searching for new bands that are more than growling into a mic with absolutely no other purpose. Thoughts, suggestions?

My tastes have changed quite a bit over the years to the point where I call it a preference in music that I hold... but I'm down for black metal and hardcore punk here and there, the mosh pit has always been a positive experience for me. I'm not a head anymore though, I've actually noticed that I'm not a head in any particular musical genre anymore... not sure if that's a good thing. Music doesn't seem as important as it used to be.
I like BLS and Atreyu, and I'm not sure which direction you like to go in as far as your heavy stuff- but I've had a lot of fun recently at shows for The Apes, Pushmonkey, Airbourne, and Beautiful Creatures... some oldschool faithfuls have always been Fear Factory, TOOL, Bad Religion, Slipknot, Sparta (or "At the Drive In" for the same sound), and Chevelle...
I remember when 16th/32nd note bass drum lines weren't a requirement for every single damned song on the album, when can we get back to that?

Many of my friends have rigid tastes in music. They wont like much outside their narrow corridor. Me, I like lots and lots of differing genres which includes heavy stuff. TOOL, Testament, Mastodon, Ministry, QotSA. Yep, those and others get rotated in my juke box.
ps. feelin utterly burnt out on all my cd's, last night i randomly put in King Crimson's Power to Believe. Wow, what a great record.

cr0m I'll bite on this message as well. I don't know how heavy you'd consider Clutch to be, but I'm into all kinds of heavy stuff: Black Metal, Death Metal, Hardcore, Powerviolence, Noise, etc. I suppose the heaviest stuff I'm really into is more like Suffocation, Man is the Bastard, Watain, Pig Destroyer, The Sword and Deathspell Omega. You can PM me if you're into this and/or more.
All that being said, I've pretty much listened to nothing but Springsteen's Darkness on the Edge of Town and River LPs for the past week. :shock:

Clutch has been a long time favorite of mine, and I would definitely agree that they've become less and less heavy with each subsequent release. I'd say they're more blues rock than anything else at this point.
As for other recent heavy stuff I'd recommend: Baroness, Torche, Witchcraft, Big Business, Weedeater, Black Tusk, High on Fire. They're all different it's hard to classify them, not really sure what you're looking for.
I also agree Evil Queens rule. Muscle Puzzle and Dead Sea also are worthy of mention. Some will suggest Teeth of the Hydra, and I've seen them a couple of times but have never been overly impressed.

I like all music you may want to check out Bathory or Acheron, Hypocrisy, Burzum. for some Death metal I guess it could be black metal but all that confuses me sometimes .
I do have a long love for Life of Agony I knows it not heavy but I love it still just a shameless plug :lol:

i know some of the more metal head faithfull out there would probably call Slipknot a sellout or MTV product, as they have been referred to many times, but i've listened to them lately like it's my job. other than that, maybe a little Hatebreed, Static-X, Scars of Life, Sevendust....nothing too crazy, not too much screaming.

The whole Mayhem/Vikernes story is one of those things that sadly still defines black metal for a lot of people even today.
Lately, I've been alternating between Baroness (the Red Album is just brilliant), The Sword, and neo-thrash stuff like Bonded by Blood and Municipal Waste.

Nothing wrong with any of these. Hatebreed is awesome and so is Static-X. The mood determines most of my listening habits.

Never really followed up on this one, the Clutch show was great! They are so damn good its sick. Really enjoyed Russian Circle. All instrumental and a great sound. Viking Skull, from England, were decent. Lot's of hair and a thick sound. I recommend checking them out for fun.
