I've got some friends coming into town Friday and they mentioned wanting to check out any type of place that does live jazz or blues.
So, I am turning to the CU faithfull to make some suggestions. Help me out?

Their website is still showing last week's lineup, but depending on who they have in this Friday, the James Club 88 might be a good choice:
Agreed, incredible Blues/Jazz place.
Also, Vonn Jazz?

Dicks Den is another that gets tossed around. I think they have a jazz night.
I may have the wrong impression, just based on the videos from James Club and the website for Vonn, but are most of the jazz offerings in town piano bar kind of Jazz? I would love to find somewhere with some more of the old school stuff.
This topic/question seems to come up a lot on CU:

Next: somebody needs a recommendation for a good men's tailor in 3... 2... 1...
Dicks Den 2417 North High St 43202
The Vonn has both a blues lounge (their original spot on 161 in Linworth) and a jazz lounge on Campus View Blvd now. Calendars are online for both. For some reason there's nothing listed at the jazz lounge on Saturday, but the Blues lounge has bands Friday and Saturday. Looks like there's a $5 cover.
I've only been to the Linworth location but it's just a cool looking club, and I would expect the decor is similar at the second location too. Very swanky upscale music club feeling but also very comfortable/jeans appropriate.
Or if you're looking for a more hole in the wall option Dick's Den all the way.
On Sunday nights Vic's Midnight Cafe has Jazz or Blues on Sunday nights. Boy was I surprised.
Friend Gerard Cox on facebook. He is a local musician/pianist and jazz/music event organizer who lives in the Discovery District. He holds jazz concerts at his place @ 594 E. Rich St. just west of I-71 (west of Lester Dr., which itself runs north-south, and w/ E. Rich St. being between E. Main & Town Streets), where he dubs his abode and super-chill outdoor environs "Cafe Le Spritz". He provides food and drink, w/ BYOB also encouraged. Monetary donations for shows on a sliding scale are sought in accord with one's ability to help further the cause. His umbrella "organization" to promote jazz, local improv. musicians, and spoken word artists, etc., is called Icebox. Seek out either Icebox or Gerard Cox, or both, on both facebook & Myspace.
Zanzibar on Long Street has jazz on Friday nights.
Bobby Floyd Trio plays at the Lobby on Saturday nights.
Thanks for all the suggestions
Barcelona has live jazz on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. Awesome food and the greatest patio in town as well.
The lobby is great. You get frisked for weapons when you go in, at least one of the times I was anyways. It's worth it to go see Bobby Floyd though.lifeontwowheels wrote >>

Check the listings in the back of Columbus Alive on Thursday as well. There's usually quite a bit to choos from on the jazz/blues tip.
I think the Lobby on Saturdays 5-9PM is about the best thing you could go to. Bobby Floyd is unfrickinbelievable, as are Derek Dicenzo and Reggie Jackson. Last time I stopped in the place was packed- but if you can get a table right by the keyboard you can gawk at Bobby all evening. And even cooler- it lets out at 9pm and you can go do even more with your evening. Sometimes there's a barbeque guy selling sandwiches right outside the Lobby too. And I don't think they start frisking for weapons until AFTER Bobby's gig when it shifts to nightclub mode.
You can hit the Lobby and then hop a few exits over on 70W and go to the Bexley Monk for a glass of wine and some pizza and listen to Pete Tender until 11PM (http://www.petetender.com/). They have a piano with a bar that wraps around it so you can sit AT the piano and he takes requests and he's a lot of fun. Tip: He knows everything David Bowie ever did EVER.
you can check with the Columbus Blues Alliance. http://www.colsbluesalliance.org/
I'd stay away from anything offering Willie Pheonix, that guy's a joke. There's many better than him and if clubs don't realize that then they are just selling you a name.
