Are there any local places to catch some free jazz or experimental music? I'm pretty new to the area and want to start figuring out where to hit up some smaller concerts.

There's a couple more of the free Thursday evening jazz concerts in Mayme Moore park still left in their summer season:

Truthfully, if you mean free jazz like Ornette Coleman, and not free jazz like jazz that costs $0, then Columbus is pretty slim pickings. Wexner Center books a fair number of more experimental jazz programs. The next one scheduled is at the end of October:

Dick's Den is the local jazz bar. You'd have to comb through listings and recognize names. Carabar and Skylab book more experimental artists at times, but they won't all be jazz-related.

Come out around 12-1230 for the Goodale Park Music Series...today is Yumbambe if Latin jazz is of any interest. Music is at the gazebo and goes from 12:30-2...and is FREE. :)

Yeah I didn't mean free in the monetary sense. There are a couple cool things coming around here I read about. Thank you.

Oops, sorry. Not too familiar with jazz sub-genres. ;)

You'll want to check out local band, Decendre for some great local experimental and "free" jazz. Check the listings at http://www.jazzcolumbus.com for when they play.
Also, local jazz promoter, Gerard Cox, usually hosts a number of free jazz and experimental jazz shows. Again, I try to keep the Jazz Site updated with those types of shows when they arrive.
As for an exclusive place for free jazz on a regular basis, I'm not currently aware of anything.
