Word came this week that Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH (one hour west of the Short North) will close their doors (at least until 2012). This 150 year old liberal arts college was nothing if not the personification of "progressive". It was founded by abolitionists, taught social justice, allowed students to create their own course of study, and did away with grades. After World War II there were only three places you could go to learn modern art in its most progressive form: Paris, NYC, and Antioch College and its close cousin the Dayton Art Institute.
The Direct influence on the founding of the Short North is convoluted and complicated. It seems that much of the history of Antioch and Dayton in the arts has been lost or never recorded. To understand the situation we need to go back 88 years to the founding of the Dayton Art Institute.

Many people don't know that Antioch College is really a regional campus for Antioch University which is alive and well and based in Seattle (I think).

Actually the Yellow Springs, OH campus was the original location, and the Antioch University system offices (with 6 total campuses - prior to this at least) at least WERE based in Yellow Springs... Maybe they'll be moved to Seattle during the shutdown?

The other campuses are primarily "study at home" based learning. Yellow Springs was the "Campus." They also offer several programs abroad, and still plan to do so.

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio (AP) -- Antioch University trustees have agreed to work with the alumni of Antioch College in the alumni's effort to demonstrate the feasibility of keeping the college open instead of temporarily closing it in July, the college said yesterday.
The trustees are requiring the alumni to develop a business plan by Oct. 25, when the trustees next meet. To help develop the plan, the trustees have agreed to give the alumni access to the school's financial data.

Alongside their Antioch College professors, students learn to fight for what they believe in.
And fight these current students and alumni did, since June when the college's board of trustees announced that Antioch would suspend operations in 2008 with the hope of retooling and reopening in 2012. Current and former students as well as teachers and the townsfolk in the Greene County village of Yellow Springs set out to raise money and persuade the board to keep the college open.
I'm happy for the Antioch alum, students and faculty that they succeeded. A nice grass roots success story.

Operations will be suspended June 30.
Antioch and Yellow Springs, tie-dyed and liberal-leaning, fed off each other. Students were encouraged to create their own programs for learning.

So sad for one of the gems surroundings Columbus. On my last visit I was under the impression that it was saved. I guess not.

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohioâ€â€Antioch University is offering its flagship Antioch College for sale to any buyer that can provide the full payment up front, after negotiations with an alumni group failed, a university spokeswoman said today.
The university and an alumni group attempting to take over Antioch College's operations called off negotiations Friday after school officials declined the group's "best and final" offer to pay half of the $12.2 million price over five years. The school wants the full payment at closing of the deal.
Antioch now says it is open to negotiations with any potential buyer  including the group of wealthy alumni and former trustees that make up the Antioch College Continuation Corporation  that can provide all of the money at closing.

Yellow Springs is great and it will still be great. Maybe a university like Bastyr will open or maybe they could turn it into a big spa resort like the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.

I was guessing something like that already happened when I saw this.
But as the article makes clear, it hasn't happened yet.

I love Yellow Springs, and travel there often to visit friends. I can't imagine them keeping Antioch open though in it's current state. Little money had been spent on the infrastructure of the campus, and most of its buildings are crumbling.
The last time I was there my friend and I took a walk through the campus, and it literally looked abandoned. There was even a giant tree uprooted and blocking one of the sidewalks! That, and the decaying artwork left behind by former students made it look very forlorn.
Perhaps this doesn't bother the idealistic young people who still want to attend Antioch, but you can't just let the campus rot away and expect to keep enrollment up.
