Anti-Gay attacks in Columbus

This happened over the July 4th weekend. The following is an alert from the Buckeye Region Anti-Violence Organization (BRAVO) website.

BRAVO, has received 3 reports of anti-LGBT attacks in multiple neighborhoods around several LGBT Bars on Friday night of the 4th of July weekend. The description of the attackers in each incident is very similar and BRAVO strongly believes that these attacks are related and were perpetrated by the same group of assailants.

In all 3 assaults the victims were jumped by a group of 6-7 young men, in well lit and populated areas. The attacks took place between midnight and 2:00 AM. The assaults involved beating, kicking, and punching with "brass knuckles". Injuries included concussions, stitches, abrasions, bruises, and head injuries; medical attention was required in all cases. Anti-LGBT language was used in all 3 of the attacks.

Sex: 6-7 Males in a group
Race: Caucasian, African American and Latino
Age: Late Teens

That is just sad and really shows the insecurity of the attackers. If you cannot let others be themselves you have a true problem. I know a few LGBT that would make it a rough night for that group and I hope the get justice or meet their match.

Were all of the victims male? It says above that the perpetrators were.

"6-7 males, Caucasian, African American and Latino"... a whole Rainbow Coalition of hate. Wish they'd break down the race barriers for something more productive.

Obvious observation, but sounds premeditated. All the more reason to approach them with caution if encountered.

A rainbow coalition committing anti-gay beatings on Independence Day weekend? This is disturbing on many fronts. Did these misguided youth come in from God-knows-where for Red White and Boom festivities? Perhaps. Sometimes out-of-towners don't understand or appreciate the inclusiveness we share in the Capital City. But that's no reason to senselessly beat a stranger. Oh man.

I went to the Stonewall site and there weren't any updates, but I found a video. It showed that anti-gay beatings were up 25% since 2005.

I thought we were past this behavior, but there are still hateful people out there that want to hurt people that are different than them. Not sure where this exactly occurred. The only reason I can think why BRAVO didn't reveal the locations is so this wouldn't scare people away from the respective businesses. Keep in mind, this may not have happened in the Short North.

That's cool. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume if it did happen in the Short North, these thugs would not have made it out of their intact.

Yeah, 4th of July I'm sure brought in quite a few out of towners without as much tolerance (and common sense) as the people who usually frequent our city. Hopefully they went home and won't be coming back, but that makes it even harder for them to be ID'd.

Happening in a populated area that was well lit, it seems like other people should have jumped in, but I guess when it's a group that big you don't really want to end up dead either.

It just puzzles me that the biblical prohibition against homosexual behavior is just one of a long list of prohibitions, and so many of its siblings have gone by the wayside. What about holding fish without scales as an abomination? Skip that, run for the all-you-can-eat shrimp dinner.

I once asked about this on the WOSU-AM call-in show, and someone called in to say the prohibition was repeated in Paul's letters to Romans, or something like that, so that's why it stands while others have fallen.

Hopefully CPD CSI was able to collect DNA from skin cells, hair follicles, and bodily fluids. I would hope this would be standard procedure for a hate crime.

I'll admit that I'm not terribly well schooled in every thing in that book o'yarns, but doesn't it say something in there about thou shalt not beat the shit out of people? I'd think tiny Jesus would frown on that one too.

I believe its actually First Corinthians, and the same passage condemns drunks, straight fornicators, the covetous, and revilers in the same list...so the drunk guys reviling the gay guys are doubly doomed.

And I'd further say who gives a bejeezus? That may be some people's motives for beliefs, but it never justifies a crime of violence, nor do I suspect these seven guys were just singin' Jesus' praises. I don't care if the bible was subtitled "Kill the Gays," it doesn't matter.

Can we not combine the two (Christians and beating up gays) for this discussion? From the release posted, I see no evidence that they claimed they were doing God's work, and based on their actions I'm going to go ahead and guess they aren't exactly devout.

The focus should be that these guys are thugs, we hope they eventually get caught and have the book thrown at them, and we still have work to do to make sure people understand that violence is a stupid response to differences.
