Except for the ones raised by great owners that do make good pets. The only danger I've ever personally been in from a pit bull was the danger of being licked to death by my friend's.
I guess if you want a pit bull, you should have to go through extensive testing/licensing/certification, much like if you want to carry a concealed weapon. That I would be totally okay with.
And those caught with an licensed firearm (er, I mean pitbull) should be charged with a felony and the dog put down.
That is a good compromise for me.

One former neighbor had a pit; the pooch would cower at the sight of my pooch ( all 25lbs of wagging fury ).
Exactly! And HOT DOGS! Our children are dying because of the merciless throat strangling of processed meat products.
Ban pit bulls and hot dogs!

Conversely the only time I was bit was by a German Shepard. Any big dog can be dangerous.
Your link didn't work, but I'm guessing it's the recent case where the guy had 5 dogs (against the local law) and sometimes let them run free (not sure but guessing that's against the law too).
Why not enforce the laws they have instead of making new (stupid) laws.

My neighbors have an adorable small pit mix. It LOVES the big bernese mountain dog at the end of my street but hides behind his owners legs when my stupid weenerdog gets out and tries to play wih him.
Any dog is dangerous when not raised properly. Unfortunately, breeds with aggressive reputations tend to attract jackass wanabee hardass owners who think it's cool to have a mean dog. In my experience, I've met more properly raised pits, rotts, and dobes that are very very sweet and loyal family pets, and have met more ill-tempered snappy, bite-y and agressive miniature breed dogs. I've also had to witness an ex's uncle shoot a family german shepherd as it attacked their 10 year old son seemingly unprovoked. And the most agressive dog I've ever encountered was a chow owned by a friend's sister who had to be put down after attacking or attempting to attack numerous visitors and injuring the other family dog. Any dog will bite. It's up to the owner to create a properly behaved dog. It's also up to a family to perhaps keep an eye on their two year old child who had no business wandering into a garage unattended...presence of dogs or not.
Many dogs bite, few dogs kill.
Rus -- srsly? I like all dogs, hot and pit alike.
Agree with the others that Pits are not the problem at all. It's all about owners taking responsibility for having a properly social dog.
I've been bit a few times - the first time was at 5 years old by the neighbors Collie - nearly took off the end of my thumb, because I was sitting with my dog (a mini doxie) in my lap. My mom's old dog was a lab/dalmation mix and was the most high strung, neurotic, not-friendly mess of a creature ever.
Meanwhile, a friend in high school had a pit and he was the most huggable dog - he was seriously friendly.
I get that Pits (and dobies and rotties and a few other breeds) are different, because they are physically capable of quick, lethal force - and that so many folks that have been attracted to the breed over the years aren't great dog owners, because it's that force that attracted them in the first place. They want the dog as a status symbol, instead of as a pet. I agree that those dogs are trouble - but know that if Black Labs or German Shepards or Huskeys held the same level of status, they would be maligned to an equal degree. It really isn't the dog's fault that it's owners/breeders are assholes.

This tragedy is beyond heartbreaking, my heart goes out to everyone involved. I really hope that people learn all the facts before jumping to conclusions about the "vicious nature of pit bulls". There are very few deaths due to dog bites every year, and the only thing they seem to have in common is that the dogs are almost always unneutered males. Hopefully this will be a call to action to stop backyard breeding and encourage spay and neuter for all dogs, instead of a knee-jerk mob reaction to kill all pit bulls.
That's something I could get behind.
Can we neuter some of the owners?
Having pit bulls around children is a Darwin award waiting to happen.

Then they can have http://www.neuticles.com/ !!!!
Pet malice is the owner's fault; not the animal.
That an argument for or against?
Nice one Rus.
