Sorry if this is in the wrong section couldn't decide between here and TV.
Are there any Anime fans out there who like to discuss movies and Series?
I'm starting to run dry on stuff to watch.
I'm stuck watching Pani Poni Dash! for lack of something good because it is just super silly with a creepy cat in the pop machine keeps things "warm with my body heat"
Some of my Favorites are Paprika, Howl's moving Castle, Ranma 1/2, Gilgamesh, Ghost in the shell SAC, Wolf's Rain. I also just finished watching Kurau's Phantom memory.

Rurouni Kenshin is by far my favorite anime series of all time; I even wrote one of the earliest complete Soujiro fanfics on fanfiction.net, and I'm pretty sure it was the earliest of its length.
A somewhat shorter series that you might like if you liked Ranma is Flame of Recca. Not spectacular, but fun escapist anime.
I actually don't know too many of the more recent series. My tastes probably date me: in addition to Kenshin, I was a fan of Slayers, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and Himiko Den. I had brief Prince of Tennis and Inuyasha phases, too, but those ran so long they got kind of old.
If you're into more ... erm, shojo ... fare, you could look at Fushigi Yuugi and Ouran Host Club. Definitely not my style (I never finished either series), but that might tell you as much as series I did finish, depending on your tastes. Same applies to Fruits Basket, though I might finish that one. Eventually. Someday. Maybe.
Vampire Princess Miyu was a little dark (and silent) for my tastes, though I finished it anyway.
Violinist of Hameln was a somewhat quirkly low-budget anime, though it got somewhat monotonous after a while, I thought.
Check out the anime club at OSU--Animate! Ohio State. I was treasurer of it for almost four years. There was a sizable population of grad-student-age regulars, some of whom really were grad students and some of whom weren't, but came basically because we were the only game in town. We never minded; we had both of the big auditorium classrooms in the Math East Annex to ourselves, so there was never any shortage of room. (A fair amount of the time, we'd be showing one anime in one classroom and just hooking a video game system up in the second ... let me tell you that Soul Calibur III is something else on a movie-theater-sized screen, as was FFX-2, though sheer size couldn't save that from its own lack of a plot. SC3 didn't need one, of course. FF games get held to higher standards.)

Bleach I like but I never have the time for that Series, it goes a little long like DB, DBZ and Naruto.
I do like Inuyasha but for long never ending series I stand by Ranma 1/2. Lum Urusei Yatsura was fun too, funny enough all by Rumiko Takahasi.
I've seen all the Cowboy bebop, Rurouni Kenchin, Peacemaker, Samurai Champloo, Slayers, and Evangelion I make it a point to rewatch the entire series at LEAST once a year. Also Hellsing, Devilman, Devil women, outlaw star, Trigun, Trinity Blood, Lain, Technolyze, Ergo Proxy, Witchblade.
What is Himiko Den like? does it have the similar cover to RG verde?
Prince of Tennis was fun and so was Ping Pong Club. I'm about to go very old school and watch Fighting Spirit (boxer based series) I also have Elfen Lied and Gungrave on the line up.
I saw all the Fushigi Yugi's and Escaflowne.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Vampire Princess Miyu, Bubblegum Crisis, Mermaid's scar and of course Battle Angel Alita. OH and GTO!
I will look into those you mentioned that I haven't seen.
I used to get New Type but ehhh doesn't seem worth the money anymore. I'd love to go to any screenings that people do but I'm so out of the loop in Columbus, Hence why I joined this. I used to be one of the Anime experts at SHOCC Comix oh so long.
If you want Silly you should watch Pani Poni Dash, It's on netflix instand play right now. It reminds me of the silliness like Dragon Half.

I watched a lot of anime roughly between 1995 and 2000. Sort of got bored with it after about 5 years. If you've seen one magical school girl fighting giant robots with talking alien animal sidekicks, you've seen them all. ;)

I don't know RG Verde, so I can't say if Himiko Den has a similar cover. It was a fairly short series (12 episodes). The plotline is fairly familiar (modern-day schoolgirl is actually a magical princess and heir to a usurped magic kingdom), but I think the soundtrack won some accolades (I certainly liked it), and hey, that plot's worked before. :wink:
I've watched the first few episodes of Naruto. I do kind of like it, but I'm not going to be blazing my way through it. Though obviously it has a tremendous fan base. The anime didn't come out until my junior year of college, so it hadn't had time to get too old yet, but I imagine by now, the folks back there have put it in the same category with Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and DB/DBZ (i.e., ones we were all so sick of hearing about that even if we hadn't seen them, we didn't intend to).
Another completely kiddie one that was fun at times (especially with a group, and I think it would be even more fun in a group that included beer) was Akazukin Chacha. Lots of cheap laughs.
Oh, and one I forgot that has run to a ridiculous length now but I actually liked anyway was Detective Conan. I had no idea how huge it was, actually. Maybe because it was always far more popular overseas than here.
On the anime movie front, the Lupin III movies were huge hits at club; I wasn't a huge fan, but they were good for one showing.

I really like AKIRA. And Miseyake films.
I like Ghost in the Shell 1 and 2 a lot as well.
My 12 year old sister LOVES Naruto.
And all she does is draw anime characters.
And she is REALLY good. :)

I just finished Watching JINKI extended. It was a pretty cute series, mechas girls, lost love.
Now I just started Utawarerumono and I'm very excited for this one!
Oh and would anyone be interested in a Evangelion marathon?

Aiite Reviving this if anyone has any new suggestions for me. I am patiently anticipating Apocalypse Meow Aka Cat Shiat One!

I am watching the Last Exile, Desert Punk and going back through Gilgamesh and All the Yamato Movies along with Galaxy Express 999 and Captain Harlock, Queen Emeraldas series.

I finished GunXsword and LOVED it. It was like a mix of Cowboy Bepop, Trigun and Macross.
Oh and Mezzo is a pretty decent short series.

Also "Ghost Stories" off of Netflix has the most surprisingly bad and wrong/vulgar dubbing I have ever heard in my life. It's like a bunch of my friends got together while they were drunk and horny and decided to sub something with as much trash talk as possible. In a weird way like a Tarantino it was amazingly funny to watch especially when they are supposed to be Middle School kids fighting ghosts through incantations.

Watched "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" recently which was pretty good.. Great animation (I think all cel, no CGI) with a cute story and characters.. Basically it's a fairy tale and pretty kid friendly overall..

While not my favourite Miyazaki film, it was pretty good.. I'll probably watch it again sometime...

Other than that I don't watch much anime...

I do occasionally read manga though.. I tend to like historical fiction manga like Lone Wolf and Cub or Shogun Assassin.. From what I can tell those tend to become movies and not anime though.. Any exceptions?

I've seen clips of the dubbed Ghost Story... I love it in theory, but anime voice actors don't necessarily make for the sharpest improvisers. Too much nerd humor, too much high school-level "randomness." I suppose that description could be applied to all improv from any source, but the bottom line is that I'd like to see more of a scripted, Soupy Norman-ish approach if ADV is going to do this kind of thing in the future.

Recently I've been watching Cromartie High School, which seems to be great all around. It's a clever subverting of the "bad-boy greaser high school" genre that Americans might be familiar with from (e.g.) River City Ransom. Also it's got a silent Freddie Mercury as one of the students, and who can argue with that?

I finally deleted my entire backlog of unwatched Yakitate!! Ja-Pan! episodes because they were taking up way too much space, and I realized that each storyline was exactly like the preceding one. I'm still not sure how you can get the funding to make 65 episodes about baking bread, especially when they repeat in several 15-episode cycles, but I guess that's Japan for you.

In February, I watched the entire run of Death Note in three days. I found it to be a textbook lesson in "taking an intriguing concept and then focusing on the most boring and unfulfilling part of that concept until everybody dies of boredom." See also: Metal Gear Solid 3. Wholly disappointing and stupid, and made worse by the fact that it seems to be the biggest obsession in the fandom right now.

In other news, Azumanga Daioh and Yotsubato! are holding up extremely well. I have one complaint with Hellsing Ultimate, which is that the episodes aren't coming out quickly enough. Also appending the word "Ultimate" to your title is a really stupid thing to do. So... I have two complaints with it, I guess.

My wife and I are currently watching Vampire Knight and Bleach. We've watched Code Geass, Trinity Blood, Death Note, and Paprika, too. I do have to agree with Jim--the last third of Death Note was pretty bad. My wife reads several different manga in addition to those above, but I can't keep track of it.

I have seen Cromartie High School and it's pretty insane.. this was years ago, but I do recall that in addition to Freddie they had a gorilla that was a master sushi chef and robot that noone seems to know is a robot..

I did see Paprika and it was pretty great.. Pretty much everything I've seen by Satoshi Kon is good. I haven't seen Millennium Actress or Perfect Blue yet but Tokyo Godfathers is a favourite (no giant robots or magical girls!) and Paranoia Agent is a surreal twist on a detective story.

Yeah, it was pretty good.. Loaned out my copy though and never got got it back.. I should pester that guy for it...

I also liked FL-CL which is a surprisingly tender coming of age story wrapped in a wacky sendup of giant robot anime.. fun stuff overall..

Never saw Bleach..

Ah yes FL-CL I need to get on that. I read tons of manga too. I through most of Deathnote and became so bored after a major character Died I haven't bothered to go back to it yet.

I have Paranoia agent on my queue. As well as Blood+. Bleach I am waiting to get into after people forget about it. I hate to watch anything too trendy ~hee~

Cromatie High is fun I prefer GTO though. I heard Ping Pong Club is pretty hilarious also.

Other random things I have on Queue are "Those who hunt Elves", "Kaliedostar", and random "doggy poo" which I hear is terrible like congo terrible.

Things I read are Battle Angel Alita, Nana, GANTZ, Blade of the Immortal and Ranma 1/2.

I've been getting recommendations for Ping-Pong Club for years. I don't know why I haven't checked it out yet. Same for Great Teacher Onizuka, which I think I disregarded because it seemed too full of itself. I'll have to check both of them out though, now that I have both time and a way to get anime without seeing that the person I'm trading with has a large collection of futanari and DBZ.

FLCL is definitely worth watching. Even the dub, if necessary. Maybe it struck home more for me because I'm naturally an introspective person to the point of emo wankery, but every scene in that was golden.

Surprisingly, I really didn't enjoy Paranoia Agent, and I don't remember why. I think it was because they took the "spooky" aspect of Lain, and then never tied it to anything with legs.

I don't know how closely the Death Note anime follows the manga, but if you're to the point where L dies then there's no point in continuing. They replace him with someone similar, but even less interesting. Normally I'd be worried about giving away plot points, but seriously. Death Note's plot can fall in a well and die.
