When loading additonal, identically sized gifs using the move tool, I can't get them perfectly aligned.

I use Photoshop CS3 which has incorporated the features of ImageReady into it (about time). I think it works just fine.

My Photoshop's old (6 I think). CS3's too pricey for me. I'll keep hunting for somethng free or figure out imageready.

I get the Adobe/ImageReady thing, everything with the looping, parameters, etc. work. The only snag is when I load the images, they don't overlap/align perfectly and the resulting animation is choppy.

You should still be able to use the animation toolbar in that version of Photoshop and not mess with ImageReady. Each layer has your different image/frame and you're working on the same canvas, so alignment shouldn't be an issue. As for the choppiness, I'd check your time between frames.

Thanks for the tip. I've been reading animation tutorials forever and I'm beginning to realize how much I don't know. The transitions using the tween function seems pretty critical.
So while I'm in Photoshop, how do I open all my frames so the overlap?
(If I'm off in the blue, don't feel obliged to respond, I'll just keep hacking)

Stick them each into a different layer. If you need to shift them around to get them to overlap you can adjust the opacity of the layers to be able to line them up.

I would just make all of your layers visible and mess with the opacity/transparency until you have each layer set exactly where you want it.
(sorry, just saw walker's same answer... I'll shutup now)

Let's hear it for the internet. Thanks to a little motivational speech by one of you guys, my CS3 is now up and running.
this is probably a ridiculously simple "tutorial" but it explains making a simple animated gif with layers in photoshop.

It's kinda hard to tell what you're trying to do, but if you hold down shift while dragging a layer off of one document onto another, it should justify properly. Is this where you're getting hung up?

I think that's exactly what I need. I'll try it and let you know. Thanks.
... pxlfarmer - did it!!! Amazing how simple some things are that get overlooked in a tutorial.
GOT IT! Thanks again all for the suggestions and discussion. Adobe 6/ImageReady 3 were quite adequate. The rest is creativity and the file saving and optimization I can get from the help menu. Special thanks to PixlFarmer for the holding the shift key suggestion to justify images.
