Growing up, I distinctly remember seeing exotic animals (zebras, llamas, etc.) between fences at the Schrock Road Anheuser-Busch brewery. When I told my coworker, they thought I’d lost my head. And, unfortunately, my Google-fu has failed me (except for a few headlines from the late 60s at columbuslibrary.org).
Does anyone else remember this? And, if so, is the internet devoid of evidence?

I remember only rumors. one that I heard was that at some point there was a christmas parade with reindeer, and when the gig was up, no one knew what to do with the deer. So they ended up at Busch, but not for long. Apparently someone pulled over on the shoulder of the highway one night and shot 'em all.

Funny you should bring up Busch Gardens...I heard years ago A-B considered using their property next to the North Side plant to house a Busch Gardens-themed amusement park. Apparently the inability to dedicate enough space to parking sunk the idea before it gained much traction. I often imagine what that would have looked like, or what impact it would have had on the development of the North Side, had it come to fruition.

Probably would have panned out as well as Sea World Ohio.

I recall hearing something similar. A-B started construction on the Columbus brewery in 1966 (it came online in 1968) - there was nothing else out there and I believe A-B owned everything between 161 and the future I-270. A-B had amusement parks around other breweries at the time. In 1970, construction began on Kings Island. Perhaps that is what killed a Columbus theme park? After that A-B started developing the area as offices.

That headline meshes with what A-B was doing elsewhere. In Tampa, they developed a large wildlife park as part of Busch Gardens. http://www.tampapix.com/buschgardens10.htm
