I still just want to know what he meant by that fly by comment. I admire nice homes all the time. Never thought of that as being envious or small town, though I did have interest in real estate even when I lived in a small town so go figure.

from my visit to the house during the GV tour a couple years ago, i don't recall that there was much color in the place, so black/whites may not leave much out. their last place was kitty-corner from Lindy's i believe and that house was back on the tour this past year.
the current house is 5000 sq ft, but with the current furnishings is not kid friendly. at least not any kid i know. i remember them having a nicely groomed glass cube of grass in the living room and thinking that would be all over the nice long white shag carpet in about 5 seconds with a child around.

I just took it to mean, "I think I know what other people are thinking, and I know I'm better than people from small towns." Although without the smileys, it's hard to tell.

I took it as, "That guy from Chicago, I like the cut of his jib."

What does that even mean?exactly, i fail to even understand this intent to ridicule on Jon's part?
a nice home of a local public figure is for sale; people post the link and others comment on the home, some with a distaste for particular design elements, others with admiration for the home and the furniture. it's not as if anyone appears blown away that it is a 1+ million dollar home, there are multiple homes in that block that would list for that. columbus as a city has quite a few.
so maybe it is the fact there they're even online gawking at all? people in big cities like NYC, LA, SF and other places spend whole weekends touring homes they will never buy. They do that here on the various neighborhood tours, which happen in most major cities. Urban sophisticates who publish or blog for Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, Dwell, or Apartment Therapy cater exactly to this desire. So do all of those people who leave the lights on and shades up in their Brooklyn Heights brownstones.
Perhaps it is because we all know where a local personality even lives. People in NYC all know where national and local people of note live in their neighborhood. If you have them in your building or on your block it is actually a selling point that gains market value. Yet you appear to be treating this post as if someone logged in and yelled, "dag gone it, Andrea Canbern lives there, I'm going down to knock on that door for an autograph."
I usually enjoy your posts, but labeling a bunch of people who comment on a local home simpletons with no elaboration appears to be a cheap attempt at mockery and comes across as grossly offensive.

double post. so i'll editorialize to say i don't mean this as an opportunity to harsh on jon for his style sensibilities, etc... this is not about trying to go tit for tat over anything else besides what i felt was personally a needless shot.

When JonMyers moves, I can't wait to go gawk at his apartment! I might bring my mom and dad 'cause they've never seen such a thing before. Gawrsh!

Maybe Jon's comment was not well received, but it is a measure of a community what it's members do an opportunity to really listen to one another shows up.
Do we dig in and go on the defensive? Or do we exercise compassion and really try to hear what someone is saying? Seems like the easy path to view Jon's comment like lashing out or an attempt to ridicule people- and that stance is a tempting one. However, it might require us to conjure up a bit of the good stuff in us and see that Jon's comment is about his personal experience and has very little to do with any of us. I hear angst and a bit of dissatisfaction with his status-quo... and I consider Jon a friend, so I'm going to resist just thinking he's coming off as a jerk- 'cause I know that fundamentally he's not.
I know him to be thoughtful, smart, and a generally good guy. And when a friend who is thoughtful, smart, and generally a good guy shares a bit of his dissatisfaction in life- regardless of where it seems pointed- I'm not going to make it about me and maybe instead I'll just shoot him a private note and ask how he's doing rather than going on the defensive and piling on publicly.
Just a thought.

Yeah, let's all HUG IT OUT!

If he meant something different than ridiculing everyone here and this town in general, he should have written something different. Or explained himself further. I'm not gonna write up a bunch of JonMyers fanfiction to put a better spin on it.

Just a thought.Maybe, but it certainly sounded as if his comment did have more than a little to do with other people, and I don't think that anyone who responded to him made it about themselves. They very clearly made it about him and his comment. As to being "defensive," there's a difference between defending oneself and being defensive. The former is not something to be ashamed of.

If you meant to come off as a sad parody of the most pathetically predictable of all local cliches - the miserable Columbus transplant - then well done.
Since that pretty obviously wasn't your intent, I hope your comment at least fed your fragile sense of superiority for a few minutes.
