I want to try a little experiment here on CU. I'm giving a heads up to the regulars here so you know what to expect.

As I'm sure you have read, a certain J.P., writing in a TOP publication, has once again savaged the ComFest. So what, you might say, it is an annual occurrence. Well, this year he went way over the top, and used lies and unethical journalistic behavior to distort the story.

There is something going on here that doesn't make sense. Snark and hyperbole are expected from this publication, but this seems so over the line that it you have to wonder Ã¢â‚¬â€œ is the end game they have in mind the death of the ComFest? Where did that come from?

I could put up a post here on CU trying to defend the ComFest, but it would be be the same thing that happens every year, with the same outcome Ã¢â‚¬â€œ outraged defense of ComFest, TOP doesn't listen, doesn't respond, they consider it advertising for the paper. Yawn.

So I want to try something different. I want to post a thread where I call out J.P. and engage him in a one on one debate. I figure there is little chance he would be lured into a free for all thread where he has to respond to everyone. I just might be able to get him to go for the mano-a-mano challenge I offer.

I have already cleared this with Walker. I will be posting a new thread soon, where I will be making the challenge. What I need from the CU regulars is an understanding of the way this will work Ã¢â‚¬â€œ the thread will not be closed to others by software changes, it will be closed by requesting you to hold off comments. If you need to comment, you can do so in a second thread that will be created for general comments.

Understand? Please respond in this thread if it is not clear.

I don't know if this will work. I don't know if J.P. has ever responded on a local board, but I'm going to try to draw him out. I hope you will allow this little experiment to play out for a while.

Wouldn't it be easier to talk to the guy in person one on one? He's not a recluse.

If it were a personal matter, sure. The attacks on ComFest are a public concern, involving a whole lot of people. I think he needs to answer some questions, and in public.

Uhh... okay.

Free country, do what you'd like, and I'll hold off, no problem.

FWIW, though, I don't get the point of having such a discussion on a community bulletin board, when your goal is to prevent the community from taking part in it. Moreover, there's always some joker who doesn't get the memo, especially once you get to the second or third screen.

I don't think the way you have it set up will work very well. There are a lot of people who randomly come on here, and will open up the thread and join along in the discussion.

If you want to have a one on one discussion that will be viewable to the public, there is a word for that. It's called an interview.

I could have the discussion in private by email, true. But I don't see the need for him to take an email seriously. Too easy to blow it off.

Think of this like a debate with two speakers at the lecterns - except online instead of in person.

And as for people who don't get the memo? Oh well. They get ignored in the thread. As I said, there can be a separate thread for those who want to comment on the debate.

Petric writes opinion columns. He's not a journalist or a reporter. If you don't agree with his opinions, don't read his columns.

I agree, an interview would probably be ideal for whatever it is you hope to accomplish. Just interview him, post the transcript, & let people comment on that.

I'm not sure what TOP article you're talking about though. Got a link?

Have you read most of Petric's music/concert reviews? He writes opinions, often for shock value or his own sense of humor. Referencing him and his article here is just giving him fodder for his next snide article.

Personally, I love ComFest but he makes some good points in the article. The mainstream appeal has (kind of) pissed on the magic. But it is still THE BEST festival in Central Ohio.

For the record, I had a great time Friday afternoon/evening, but had a terrible time on Saturday night.

After reading the article I really don't see the point in legitimizing it by interviewing him. It's clearly a sensationalist piece of writing. Evil gay blacks laugh at disabled dads at comfest!

I'm not familiar with this person, but they are either an intelligent person who is writing this for satiric comedic value (Colbert, Onion) or is just plain silly.

Either way, I don't see how this no-name person in a paper nobody reads has any effect on ComFest.

You know, in the wrestling business there's a technique "heels" use called "cheap heat". When a wrestler isn't talented enough to be a villain through his performance in the ring and subtle moves, he instead turns to things like insulting the town the show is in that night or a fake fight with a plant in the crowd to get people to boo him (read "pay attention" to him).

After reading a fair amount of Petric's writing, he strikes me as simply working on cheap heat for himself and his column in TOP. Probably after a realization that no one would be paying him much attention based on simply talent or content, he plays the villain with created hype instead.

Don't feed into it.

Core, that's exactly right. As far as I have ever been able to see, he's a one trick pony.. I've been reading him for years and basically this is what he always does.. He attacks the "group" (band or other) then he makes fun of their supporters and fans by picking out the most the most ridiculous things he can point out... Rinse and repeat.. He merely seems to have brought his "one trick" over to the Comfest article

Are there problems with Comfest? Sure there are, but I don't think Petric will ever be enough of a writer to clearly state what they are and what can be done to fix them..

I'm aware that J.P. uses a lot of deliberate hyperbole to tick people off. Maybe that is in the job description. Maybe he is an ass. I'm intrigued by his real motivation. Can he step out of the role he has in the paper and talk like a real person?

As far as the thought that he is of no importance for the future of the ComFest - true, but he does have a big platform to spout his views. And some people in the fest were hurt by his article. Does he live in a consequence free zone where nothing he says has to be justified? Does he have no ethical restraints in his work?

Seems like it would be worth it to try to find out.

Why not go to his store and ask him?

Based on the replies you received here, not many seem to care about his commentary and opinion on Comfest.

TOP is groveling anyway. After reading the most recent article, I have finally come to terms with the brutal fact that TOP is weak and thin and the Dispatch-owned Alive is (more) vibrant and relevant (even while featuring the who's who at joe shmo's gala). Sad.

I thought about writing to TOP that they charge $.50-1.00 if they return to a decent publication.

forget a second thread for the audience. let's use this thread for colorful commentary. i.e. stories about petric or johnny go's.

i'm sitting on one that involves two osu underclassmen, a bit of swagger&sativa, and plenty of udf premium ice cream.
