I never understood the hate for Cleveland. I think that everyone has this idea about it that is based on some quaint 1990s vision of the the river catching on fire.
Sure there's bad spots of the city, but I've been up there a number of times, including several assignments where I spent months in the city for work, and I've found that there's plenty to do there, no matter what your interests are.
The restaurants are great, there's Baseball, Football and Basketball if you're so inclined. The museums are fantastic. The world class Cleveland Clinic is there and CWRU campus beats OSU campus hands down.
There's plenty of great neighborhoods in the city, including Little Italy, Ohio City, Cleveland Heights, University Circle, and they're all fairly easy to reach without a car thanks to the transit system that includes rail, BRT and street buses.
I'll agree that jobs are a huge issue up there as their economy has long been industrial. As those jobs have fled overseas and new jobs haven't been created they've lost population to places like Columbus and elsewhere.
It's far from perfect, but I'd never classify it as "miserable".

I have to also disagree with the constant dumping on Cleveland. I haven't spent any extended amount of time there (no more than a week), but I never came away with a negative impression. Just went up the other weekend for a Cavs game and had a great time. Cheap, and very nice hotel close to the arena, and had drinks at a nearby restaurant right after wards.

you're all quoting great reasons for visiting cleveland. if the article was entitled "most miserable cities to visit" you'd all have made valid points....
...but i'm from cleveland. its awful. i've never look back for fear i'll turn into a pillar of salt.
Via the article: Cleveland secured the position thanks to its high unemployment, high taxes, lousy weather, corruption by public officials and crummy sports teams... Cleveland nabbed the top spot as a result of poor ratings across the board. It was the only city that fell in the bottom half of the rankings in all nine categories... Northern Ohio has seen 309 public officials convicted of crimes over the past 10 years according to the Justice Department.
so its not ENTIRELY an opinion piece... at least some semblance of data was used to draw these conclusions.
although i still think detroit is worse.

The people I go to visit in Cleveland agree that it's a great place to live. I think it's probably relative to personal opinion. What we also need to recognize is that it’s part of Ohio as were several cities on that list (somewhat concerning). That whole region is hurting and ranking it as some miserable hole isn't going to help the people that live there. Citing it as a great place to visit may draw some positive attention that could lead to income for local business. I'm all for that. It's a good thing. I'm hoping the city is in a transitional period from industrial to service oriented businesses. Not sure if there is data to support that but it may be interesting to look into.

I grew up in the Cleveland area. And I have to agree, it's a miserable place to actually live.

I love Cleveland for all of the reasons people have listed above, but mostly I just love it because... I love it. I really do. I get teary-eyed just thinking about it and if it weren't being immolated by economic forces that make it seem like an ant writhing under a magnifying glass, I'd move back right away.

Why haters on Cleveland? Jealous much? Food, Arts and other museums, a great big lake, diverse people and history, older suburbs with some charm. Food and Arts alone are well more developed than any other city in Ohio, perhaps Cinci is close. What's there to hate besides their economy? (I'm not a sports fan).
Forbes chooses it's cities based on one or two things their editors are fond of... "Cleveland has no X, thus their people must be miserable", (proclaimed in a nineteenth century know it all, master of the universe sitting in his smoking parlor voice), and they historically choose cities that currently have negative press so as to appear hip and in touch... I say a class action lawsuit is in order, any takers?
