I don't know about you, but what I saw was someone who looked to have training in martial arts taunting a stranger on the bus, attacking him, and then claiming to be the victim. I watched the video carefully and didn't see any evidence to support the older man's claim that the younger man struck first. At best, I would say both men were at fault.
I'm not sure what we're supposed to find appealing about this video.
I watched it without sound on the old computer. I switched to this one and watched again, I stopped it after listening for about a minute.

well,gee,i am so sorry.
would it have been more appealing if they had been in a starbuck's sharing a latte,or maybe fighting over some sushi??
This was depressing to watch. It sounded like there was a confrontation before they got on the bus. The younger guy made comments about the older guy getting his shoes shined by a black dude. Older guy said it didn't matter who was doing it. Everybody trying to look tough.
Amazing what people come to blows over.

i thought it was more about age, than race.
the old guy did move away.the only reason that guy got in the old guy's face was because he thought he could push him around.
legally, that old guy had every right to clean the other guy's clock.he had nowhere to run.
now mr. bloody nose has a new respect for elderly folks.

Oh, come on. "He started it" isn't even a valid argument on the playground.
you come on.
why so cranky?
someone throws a punch at me and it lands or barely lands, i am gonna fight back. especially if i already moved away from the guy to avoid such a confrontation. both shoulda kept their mouths shut, but that just doesnt happen any more. does it, Cookie?

So what should one do when assaulted? :) Hold on, I'm going to call the police? The elder already moved away from the guy. Let's have a rational discussion while you punch my face.

isn't there legal merit to self defense?

Depends on the state. In Ohio it might be completely legal depending upon the judge's interpretation of the Castle Doctrine's changes a few years back . Old guy might well have been within his rights (had he been carrying a gun) to shoot the kid.
