I decided to search for a WOW vs TW type thread, because I just switched to WOW for the first time (I moved) after having TW for the past few years (I didn't want to switch to WOW, long story). I too have heard how great WOW is and how crappy TW is. Yet, I hardly ever see anyone substantiate these claims in terms of Mbs and $.
So I set up with WOW a couple weeks ago, 8Mbs internet only (I don't care about TV), at about $65 a month. Of course, saying that you get xMbs is meaningless, since the speeds are approximations; you need to test them. So what have I been getting with WOW? About 2-8Mbs. I'm not sure I've ever seen it go over 9, and it seems like it averages more like 5. Actually, it is poor enough that it drops down to 1 at busy times.
Now when I had TW, I paid for 7Mbs, or whatever, and from my tests, 7Mbs was usually more of a minimum  very often my speeds were around 20Mbs and higher! I just called TW, and they are willing to give me 7Mbs for $35 or so. I used to live with multiple people and have a package, so I was unaware how low I could get just internet. I'm at a new location, so there is no guarantee that I will get my old speeds, maybe I will be disappointed, but how can someone even defend WOW when they charge DOUBLE.
I will say, WOW definitely seems nicer. Time Warner is almost rude in ways, but at half the price and perhaps double-triple+ the speed, it's hard to pass. Perhaps I could bargain WOW down (can you?) but I would also like to bargain a speed increase for free... (or actually get what I pay for)

I like wow I hate time warner with a passion, and the way they package their channels are a joke.

I'm seriously thinking about switching to Uverse. We're paying around 150 with TimeWarner for roadrunner, hd dvr, Hbo, no phone.

We have WOW.You will have a hard time finding a stronger advocate that you switch from Time Warner. WOW is awesome, with the exception of one thing:Their guide system looks like it was written in 85.So perfectly explained!!! I may actually go back to WoW. The service was solid. But that damn channel guide, gads!

If you can get U-verse, I highly recommend it.
One thing to note. The internet speed is limited by your in-house phone wiring. U-verse runs fiber up to a node in your neighborhood and uses the telephone copper-line to transmit the final distance. That distance and condition of that wire greatly affects the internet speed.

I had U-Verse for one year and agree it's really good. Wish they would hurry up and get it here.

Not really. They can run the wires for you to where you want your modem but you do need a phone jack. TV and Internet is ran through the phone line.

My phone wires consisted of an empty box that used to have phone lines, I ripped them all out prior to even thinking about uverse (I just know I never want a home phone). U-verse came and ran a fiber cable to my house, then into the phone box just to get into the basement, then the fiber went to Coax Cable to move through the house. TV and internet with my setup does not use 1 inch of phone line.
As far as internet speed, with the 8Meg package I have watched my downloads balance out to about 1.25 MB per second.
Great news for uverse and 360 owners - your 360 can be one of your TV DVR receivers for a one time fee of 59 dollars. Compared to the 10 a month for the extra HD box, this is a better deal.

I've been getting a lot of pixelation on time warner lately, mostly on on-demand, it drives me insane.

I agree. Wow has excellent service. The channel guide is archaic

Uverse has really started upping their game. It was already superior IMO and they are now rolling out the latest stuff, which eventually will see 4 simultaneous HD feeds (I'm at 3 now), and internet speeds up to 25 Mbps. (for a fairly reasonable $65 per month) My picture quality has gotten noticeably better in the last few months as well (read it was due to better mpeg-4 compression on the Uverse forums)

you will also be able to use your Xbox 360 with Uverse(for $59 or $99) so could you potentially save on not having a box in the long run.

I love my U-Verse internet. I usually pull faster download than this, but oh well.

Anyone know if U-Verse is or coming to Short North/VV area soon? The availability search on ATT site is worthless. I have been dying to leave TW for a long time.
