Just wanted to let everyone know that Alive has started polling Columbus residents about what the city needs. We're planning a cover story in a few months geared towards the future of Central Ohio.

We want to hear from you about problems, challenges and solutions.

It was fun. I had to restrain myself from answering, "What should be done to improve networking opportunities here?" with something involving making Walker a Networking Czar.

I think the best way to create more networking opportunities is to ditch the word "Networking". Always creeps me out when someone jams a card in my hand, immediately pitches me and doesn't ask one damn question about my business.

Same here. Happened to me at the IGNITE Columbus event. A guy got me cornered and immediately started pitching me Enterprise Level software. I run a small business from my home. Reminded me of being at a fair and those dudes are throwing wine and coffee grinds all over miniature carpets and then vigorously wiping up the stains with a cloth and some miracle liquid all the while sweating and evangelizing into a headset.

agreeing with Ndecent is weird...overall the survey was weak, vague, and destined to give fairly bland insights.

THIS is the closest I need to get to networking (my line of work doesn't require it in the first place). CU is great interaction without the hard sell.

The only kind of networking I like is when a friend of a friend suggests a business or person...that is it. Network, schmetwork---people will connect when and where they are supposed to via other people or random happenings (airplanes, grocery line, etc.)

I'd agree, to an extent. We have a lot to offer that is already pretty comparable to those and other cities.

I just would like to see us think, collectively, as being the big city we are.

I think the word "networking" was used in the survey because people know what it means, and it can be a pretty broad term used to describe business or personal relations.

Semantics schamantics.

I do think it's interesting that The Alive is running this survey. I agree with ndcent that Columbus is fine as it is, and we should embrace our strong points and kick any sort of inferiority complex to the curb. But at the same time that doesn't mean that we shouldn't strive to improve and look towards positive growth in the future.

Hopefully some people will bother to give feedback worthy of good indepth article in The Alive. I'll only be disappointed if the the final result is a two-page spread with photos and not something a bit more grand.
