Already read this earlier. Entertaining column, especially from a guy who's generally so dry. (Actually makes it hard to tell just how serious/light he intended this to be. But I enjoyed it either way.)

I was going to try to prove that statement false by simple history.... but wikipedia proved me wrong.
Beer is one of the world's oldest beverages, possibly dating back to the 6th millennium BC, and is recorded in the written history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Right on the history, wrong on the logic. Beer wasn't necessary; wine (or any other alcoholic beverage) would've worked just as well. :wink:

The article mentioned wine, I believe, though admittedly relegated it to a something of an extra while giving beer the lead role.

Beer is for N. Europeans and wine is for Mediterranean folk. Luckily, I'm a good mix of both :)

All of you could have just distilled grain alcohol if you wanted.... My point is, none of these beverages was necessary if a functional equivalent existed that could have played the same role.
And, Merc, as long as I'm hoping to come over and sample your Cadell & Williams beverages, I think I'll refuse to be baited by any comments about wine and elitism.... :wink:
