Yes I did. Have to see whether it sets off the house alarm or a separate alarm. We would not want to scare the dog too much.
I remembered this thread when I went to a Home and Garden show today. I don't know how much these things are but:
http://ironfortresssecurity.com/
He was saying that a potential thief who sees this might not additionally want to venture into the home if the A/C is locked up like that. I don't know, could have some psychological credence as a deterrent of home invasion.
They had different styles there, too.
It is really sad when it comes down to this...

Tonight at around 8pm, Mae and I were watching THE CAINE MUTINY in our living room. We heard a knock on a living room window (that had been placed where a door had once been). The dog rushed to the front door barking. I peeked through the peep hole...I saw someone there but I could not make out who it was. I reached down to hold the dog and I opened the door. I saw an elderly African American man wearing a black parka and a black baseball cap crouched down and trying to look in that window to our living room. He backed up when I opened the door (but did not stand up straight). He said he thought that the MacDonalds lived here but that he must have been mistaken.
As far as we can tell, no one by that name has ever lived in this house. I called the police and a pair of officers stopped by a half hour later. They said that it is a common trick for someone to knock on the door in order to see if someone is home. If no one answers, the break in and burglarize the place. If someone is home, they say they were looking for someone who used to live there.
I live a block or so away from OTE in the Discovery district. Couldn't find my house slippers the other day... couldn't find a pair of tennis shoes either... realized I had left both out on the back porch so as not to track mud in. Someone stole them. Someone stole my freaking house slippers.
We have fences around the yard and between buildings to prevent cutting through.
Overkill, motion detector flood lights mounted up high just a few weeks ago.
Two dogs, one of which is a huge Doberman.
Decorative bars on every door/window on the first floor.
And they stole my damn house slippers... probably in broad daylight after they pretended to look through the trash cans in the alley...
This past week myself and the security for a nearby parking lot chased off three guys (a pair of collaborators, and one guy on a bike looking into cars) within 30min of each other who were def looking for something to steal... at around 10am.
Love a lot about downtown, but getting sick of this myself.
Hugh, a similar thing happened to me. This is from my post in the suburban to urban thread. I had just thought they were trying to check out what I had. Now to think about it, it might have just been their first attempt. In your case, it appears they might know someone is not home during the day (people who stripped your ac). I am hoping they took note of your dog. The stripped ac might even be like a broken window - causing your home to attract the wrong attention.
I think you have to keep your guard up a bit. There are things you have to watch for. I had my apartment broken into several years ago. It was preceded by a stranger knocking on my door and asking if "Tom" still lived there. It was odd as he was clearly checking out my living room as I told him no and he asked a couple of other rambling questions. Sure enough, one week later my place was robbed.
I guess I need to reassemble what is left of the AC condenser so that it look whole. Hopefully this moron noticed the 50 pound boxer I was holding. Not a huge dog, but hopefully big enough to be a deterrent.
I wanted to take a minute to say thank you to all of you that encouraged me to get a "second opinion" on the quote that Atlas-Butler provided me to replace my stolen AC condenser unit. I was able to get an estimate for $2000 (!!) less than what Atlas-Butler quoted me.
Still sucks that the unit was stolen (and the giant rock through my bedroom window the following week didn't help) but I'm glad it won't be *as* expensive as it originally looked to be.
evantyler- did you use Chris at Hissway?
