Guess I'm just wondering how prevalent poetry is these days in the culture as a whole? I know a few people into it in real life and some here, of course, but no idea if poetry itself is prevalent enough to count as a part of the larger culture. I suspect not, but think that's based on my own views rather than any empirical evidence.
Most of the blasphemies on here are somewhat niche. If we're judging things in terms of the larger culture, liking "Arrested Development" is the blasphemy.
But, yes, while poetry does not have huge readership, there are more people reading it now than there has been at any other point in history; maybe not as a percentage of the population (although I think a large historical poetry readership is mostly a myth) but they're out there. If not, Barnes & Noble wouldn't have a poetry section (even if I think half the stuff in that section is awful ;-)
