Inspired by the New York School Annuals of the 1950's and fueled by music "Visual Rhythms" is the first show to come from AbX, a recently formed group of independent artists set to spark a dialogue on the thriving non-objective art scene in Columbus.
The show's concept originated during discussions in late 2009, among some of the group's members that non-representational art was not being adequately represented around their city. So they decided to take matters into their own hands and form a collective of like-minded artists whose work all have an affinity, organize a show and bring it to Columbus themselves.
Directly influenced by the "9th St. Show", the first of the New York School "Annuals", the rules for forming the group and organizing the first show were simple; focus solely on the use of color and form. All of the artists' works in "Visual Rhythms" share a cohesiveanti-figuritive aesthetic with music as the unifying element. The group set out to directly connect with the viewer and decided to incorporate music with the work in the show by choosing a selection of music that inspired his/her work which will be playing on an mp3 player attached to the wall, adjacent to his/her work, with a set of headphones for the viewer to experience on a personal level.
"Visual Rhythms" is the debut effort to come from AbX and will be a 2 day, dual-venue exhibition hosted by the Couchfire Collective, happening Memorial Day weekend, in the South Campus Gateway at the OhioArt League and the OSU Arts Initiative. All new work will be featured by: Jay Moffett, Amandda Tirey Graham, Ashley "Coreroc" Voss, Brian Reaume (BJR), Megan Burkholder, Bethany Jozwiak-Butler, Nikos Rutkowski, Ryan Orewiler, Jurate Phillips, Michael Bush, Peggy Mintun, Cyrus Fire, Douglas Fordyce and organizer, Juan Carrera.
The show posters and postcards are designed by Ryan Mowry and the exhibition is being curated by artist/curator Stephanie Rond. Special guest Dj Moxy will be doing a set for the opening reception Friday evening, May 28, 2010, from 6-9pm.
