Titled: 315 Construction Article Is Missing Something

    Hello,

I couldn't help but notice that your Sunday article about the Route 315 construction ("Rt 315: Getting There From Here") was missing one vital piece of information: the price tag. ODOT is spending $24 million (that's $8 million per mile) on minor repairs and short-term maintenance. Whenever any article is written on proposed passenger rail projects, the cost is always prominently displayed. It's easy for people to take for granted that roads are expensive and that we all collectively pay for those, whether we use them or not.

In 2006, Nashville was able to build a 32-mile passenger rail line for $41 million (that's less than $1.3 million per mile). It's time for the citizens of Columbus to consider our transportation options on a level playing field, and evaluate the real taxpayer costs associated with highways and roads.

    Thanks,
    Walker Evans

Hey Big D. Get on board with Public Transportation. Public Transportation supports newspaper consumption because you need something to read on the ride. Promote public transport and save the Dispatch.

    Good work Walker.

8 million $ per mile. I wonder if that is competitive?

It's all transportation money, whether it's for roads or trains.

Do you know when/if they might print it? I hope so and I can't wait to see what people say about it on the Dispatch's website.

Even at $1.3 million per mile, a rail system is still a waste of taxpayer money.

I'm curious. Where would the proponents of this light rail system have it travel to?

yes! this is exactly what every other city in and out of the U.S. who have rail systems have forgotten. It's amazing that we're one of the few cities of our size left who still realize this fundamental truth! Those poor saps just keep expanding their rail systems as ridership expands not realizing that they're just a big waste of money and that they'd all be better off just building bigger highways... SUCKERS!

Unlike a rail system, which is crowded with thugs and punks who would do harm to innocent passengers, my family doesn't have to worry about that while we're driving on the freeway system in our car.

Well if it was up to me, I'd like to be able to get up to Worthington, Polaris or even to Powell or out to Port Columbus, Easton or Gahanna.. I could see myself going to Old Dublin more than once a year (though I didn't make it last year)..

I could imagine that people might like to go to work on a light rail system rather than having to drive.. It might also come in handy for going to concerts and sporting events..

I suppose there might be die hards that really want to spend 45 minutes stuck behind a conversion van after an OSU game though...

It might also be nice to move out of the downtown and short north core and still have access in the evenings or weekends without having to drive.

Areas I might not want to live in now due to poor transportation options would be a much better option. Areas along a light rail line would become more desirable to live in.. This would increase their value and improve the tax base of the city.
