Didn't know where to put this, but does anyone own the 2nd Generation Zune? I'm looking to spice up my MP3 player life and am (kind of sort of) opposed to iPods so I thought this might be a good alternative.
Thoughts? Help? Advice? Assistance? Never ask a technology question here again?

Just kidding... in all seriousness, everything I've read generally suggests that you get more bang for the buck from an iPod. The only advantage to a Zune is if you know other people who have them- then you can (kinda sorta) share songs with them.

Motorist is just jealous that there are no holes in my house and because I don't live by a bunch of sex offenders.
I don't like iPods because Apple refuses to sign an agreement with the software company typically used by libraries to offer downloadable audiobooks. We're libraries, for pete's sake! It's so people have to purchase through iTunes. Dumb. I listen to a lot of audiobooks on my MP3 player so it would kind of defeat the purpose for me to get one and not be able to get them for free from the library.
But I like my gadgets, so I want a cool one...

I wasn't joking, I really wasn't sure. I thought I remember seeing some mp3s on mine that I must have overlooked converting but it was a while ago and the booze makes my memory fuzzy.
Edit: Wasn't joking about Bexley people either. Small hands. Smell like cabbage.

It's not the format that's the issue-- it's getting the DRM permissions to allow the files to download.
And I would look like a freak if I had bigger hands.

My phone (verizon chocolate) is also an mp3 player.
don't know your cell phone status, but I think most of the major carriers have some sort of mp3 phone option. I just like not having to carry six different gadgets.
I've been pretty happy with it. And it was free (with two year contract extension), so ... yeah me.

I have a Chocolate too (the red one, mmmm) but it doesn't hold very much unless you expand the memory and it doesn't have as much functionality as I'd like (video, pics, etc.).
And now that I have the Chocolate, which is a great little phone, I wish I'd gotten a crackberry or some such thing with a qwerty keyboard. I've suddenly become a texting addict. It's taking over my life!!! :shock:

(I have the red chocolate too.) I can take pictures with my Chocolate, but yea... it does have its limits. And no video.
Verizon has a full keyboard phone too... Hugh has it. And loves it. We had to have a texting intervention earlier this year :)

I've been really happy with the battery life. I can (and do) listen to it all day at work, and still keep a good charge for calls at night. I had a two and a half hour phone conversation on a partial charge the other night, so overall I feel like battery life has been one of the best things about the phone.
The one thing I don't like is the button placement. there are four touch sensitive buttons surrounding the dialer disk (they ripped off the ipod for that...) and when I talk on the phone, my earings will sometimes hit the touch sensitive buttons. It can be annoying if you are trying to use an automated phone system. That has been my one major complaint.

Totally agree with HeySquare. Battery life is great, but sometimes I find myself sending text messages with my chin because of the buttons. And no one wants to get a text message sent by someone's chin.

Can't you check out the audio books from the library and rip them onto your ipod using iTunes? Just like any other CD? I know it's more work than just downloading it, but it's the same end result.

Yes-- but don't tell anyone I said so (shhhhhh. :)) And in reality, I could just just download the audiobooks from the website, burn them to CDs using WMP, rip the CDs into iTunes, and then load them onto an iPod that way. But we're not even supposed to tell people that because it gets around Apple's DRM issues (again, shhhhh). It's really just a matter of the work involved. I could get an iPod and do all that, but Apple has just made me cranky by forcing me to do all that legwork.
So I take it everyone thinks an iPod is the way to go? No Zune for me? If I end up bucking the iPod train, I will let everyone know how it goes...

I'd say it's a matter of taste and personal preference. I'm an iPod user and love it and have no complaints, but I hear the Zune (2nd Gen) is pretty nice.

Jo has a Zune and absolutely loves it. I like the interface. I like the battery life. I like the sound quality, and I have a certain loathe for iTunes as a program in general, and the Zune one is pretty nice.
I don't really see many negatives too it other than that it is thicker than most.
