So I picked up a copy of 614 Magazine yesterday. I have to say I really liked it. Way better than some of the others out there. The Grandview police story was my favorite, since I live in the area. Has anyone else seen this magazine yet?

I grabbed a copy at lunch yesterday. Yeah I was impressed. The writing was surprisingly good. If I was the Alive I wouldn't be too thrilled right now.

I picked up a copy on my way to Spice Bar the other day. I was feeling a little tired, so I ordered a Red Bull, only $6 at the bar, not bad brah! I had a long day shopping for the perfect new Affliction tee, but I was thirsty and needed some energy. The magazine was a little hard to read (I was wearing sunglasses inside of course) but then I remembered I don't really read too much anyways - I just like to check out the hot pics of the honeybees, man theres some dope chicks in there brah! After all that Red Bull and sitting I had to go fix my gelmet and take a wizz but then I was able to make it back to the bar for another Red Bull and the last of flipping thru the mag before my dogs showed up. I think this magazines (pictures) really represent my style and Columbus in a pretty like dope way and shit.
Anyways, gotta run to Nordstoms at E-town (easton yo) and see about these new Ed Hardy jeans. Peace!

I'm not what I'd call a young professional, but I do have a real job so perhaps that does make me somewhat professional. I thought the magazine was really cool. Judging by some people on this website they don't seem to like it much. Don't really know why that is though.

so where did everyone pick the mag up at.

Yawnzers. How many glossy lifestyle magazines have to fail before someone gets it right? Swap any feature, article or photo out of 614, C, C-bus or any of the other defunct predecessors and you'd never know. There's nothing distinct or original in any of them, save variations on a theme like the cigar review in 614.
Alive isn't an untouchable cornerstone of Columbus news, lifestyle or society but I don't think they have much to fear unless readers really want magazine-quality photography above all else. That's the biggest distinction between the two, and I'm sure Alive could erase it if they decided to use something other than newsprint. The only reason TOP should give 614 a second look is because the quality of their rag has plunged since the change in ownership, but they've still been around long enough to be almost a weekly habit.
There's another advantage for Alive and TOP: More frequent printing means 614 could get scooped on everything. By the time 614 publishes a review of a restaurant, odds are good I've already read about it somewhere else and been there myself. In an era where daily papers can't even meet expectations for news consumers, a monthly magazine will have hella trouble being at the leading edge.
614 needs to chickety-check itself on issues like that Restaurant Week deal - if you want to ingratiate yourself to the 25-35 target audience, picking fights with groups like Dine Originals Columbus is a horrible place to start. Even the Alive, with the Dispatch's credibility to back it up, would lose that p.r. battle. I don't know if we can chalk that up to Lewis & Clark's n00bdom or if they're really that arrogant.

Well my opinion went from "meh" to "ugh" I guess then.

I like the "unexpected color" they chose for that bag in the makeover story.

I like the idea of the makeover each issue, actually, but more (and higher quality) photos would probably make it more interesting. I also didn't buy the finished product as all that professional looking.
I'm going through it a bit now, found one area they should probably spend some more time reading CU about:
While some Central Ohio stimulus requests have clearly fit into the 'here-goes-nothing' category (an owner of a pizza place filed for thousands), it may provide the bankroll for Ohio's light rail aspirations. Governor Ted Strickland estimates costs of around $250 million for establishing a passenger rail that would pass through Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

In an effort to not judge a book (or magazine) by its cover I sought out a 614 Magazine today. I must admit I was momentarily mesmerized by the size and the big pretty pictures; it was almost like I was holding a real live magazine or something. But I snapped to and composed myself enough to look beyond. I read this thing from cover to cover then put it back in the stand.
I don't see myself picking this up again. On paper I am their target demographic in age, location, income, family status, frequency of going out, etc. but this magazine was not written for me. It's for the reader that gets their "classic" martini from Marshall's with a lemon peel instead of an olive.
I found much of the writing forced, boring and redundant. Many pieces begin with the equivalent of "It was a dark and stormy night...", so now we know where Lantern alums write after graduation. And there were what I think were attempts at humor or sarcasm in several articles but I often couldn't tell if they were serious, not funny, or if the writer was just an asshole.
An aside about the "cheap date" dine and dash comment: This would have been not funny before the Hiaku tragedy. It was obviously intended as a joke for their immature audience. But it suggests poor taste and/or ignorance of the impact of that particular dine and dash on the victims, our community and their on paper target demographic. Sadly I think it's indicative of what will be their actual shallow, self centered and generally oblivious readership that it didn't even occur to them or they didn't even know about it to begin with.
I do wish the publication success. I'm certain it's a lot of work and it is admirable to try to bring new spirit to the stands where ghosts of Columbus social mags still linger. I know there is a market for their writing style, narrow range of topics and lack of depth therein. I just didn't feel it said anything new. Or funny. Or interesting.
And does anyone else think the comment bubbles on their website look like a thumbs down? Again, I can't tell when they're kidding.
