I'm glad to support new businesses, and want Gay St. to be a vibrant thriving corridor. So I wish the new venture all the best.
That being said, I really question the choice to open another record store so close to Spoonful. Hopefully this new place tries to do something truly different so that it doesn't compete as much with Spoonful as it sounds like it will.
Because at the end of the day, if they do wind up as competitors, it's going to be Spoonful that gets my support.

Being close might actually help as customers can hit up both stores to check inventory. Seems a pretty niche market though, especially with ebay, amazon and internet vinyl stores.

I did read your interview. And saw that you asked the very question I have. Which is why I didn't definitively say that I won't be visiting the place.
But, the given response to how/why this will differ was awfully vague. So, at the very least my skepticism is warranted. I'd have expected a little bit more in the way of concrete details, he had to know, or should have known, that the question was coming.
If this is a full on record store, carrying the same style of records as Spoonful, its not going to matter much if they also sell ties. Comic books, concert posters, and live in store music are all common elements of record retail.
I was hoping to see in the interview some discussion of how this new store would fit in with and complement the various communities of which it'll be apart: the local music community and the downtown retail community. I didn't see much on that front, at least nothing with any level of specificity.

Nothing wrong with competition.. I find that record stores/small music stores each have an identity due to the people running them loving what they do. Used Kids and Johnny Go's exist very close to each other and do fine. I visit them both, depending what I'm looking for or what kind of mood I'm in.
Although for now, there's a lot more foot traffic and potential customers around OSU to support those two stores than there is to support two stores downtown. I have to imagine this new store will have an advantage over Spoonful because of their location, but that should only inspire Spoonful to make their store better.

It would be nice to see what the owner is doing with their living space. I remember seeing Jeff Mathes' place (67 E Gay) and it sparking me to want to live downtown.
