Does anyone know what is going on with 51 E Gay St? I see the For Sale has been gone a couple weeks and I noticed today they have the door open and there are workmen in there doing construction inside.

Tom Fortin had an option on developing the property (which he discussed HERE) but from what I heard, that option elapsed and so plans for both Zen Cha and El Arepazo in that space have fallen through.
I've seen some people coming and going from the building over the last few weeks, but it looks more like minor cleaning than actual construction. Are there construction permits posted on the windows/doors?

I see there is a city permit on the glass door- however the section where it states intent, it is covered by a sticker on the door, so I was unable to read the intent of the city building permit.

Looks like the paper has been taken off the front window. Found this website with drawing of the renovated front of the building. I wonder if they are fixing this building up finally.

I'm pretty sure Tom Fortin only had an option on the building and it lapsed. I think that PDF is old.
Could be wrong though...

Yeah - Could be-- do not see any date on the pdf. I did walk by it today, and they have all the paper off the doors and windows and the door open and a half dozen workers are inside. I noticed they have been putting up some framing for walls inside and that they had some blueprints of the space sitting on the inside ledge of the window. So something is going on inside.

"what is he building in there?"

I have to ask because I have been wondering forever about this place but What is the deal with (Zen Cha) on Gay St?
Is it a tea salon or a stock room? It never seems to be open when there are people in there it does not appear that they are having tea. To be honest I can’t imagine anyone making a trip to have tea in a place that looks like an office /stock room. On the other hand I can’t imagine someone would pay Gay st. Rent to have a place with no traffic. Is there something I am missing ?Posted 11 months ago # -
Zen Cha is no longer moving into 51 E. Gay Street. They have offices and a showroom down the street in the former Grip Technologies space (I think 17 E. Gay Street). There are plans to eventually turn it into a cafe, but I think they were behind in getting the Bexley store up and running (which is now open!).

There is construction going on inside 51 E. Gay, but I've not heard what the plan is (if there is even a plan at all, or just the building owner updating it for an easier time leasing it).

Sorry I meant 17 E Gay not 51 but it had me wondering because it seems like a waste of a good store front just to have boxes everywhere and nothing really going on. So if it eventually changes into a retail place that would be a great thing.

Zen Cha has been setting up during Pearl Market and selling a few varieties of tea. But I do wish they would open a full store

Couple buys Downtown building to renovate, live in

A vacant building on a mostly revitalized block of Downtown’s Gay Street is getting another shot at renovation, after a plan last year fell through.
The 106-year-old building at 51-53 E. Gay St. was bought by Jim and Dianne Brennan, who plan to renovate the top two floors of the three-story building to live in, and revamp the ground floor’s retail space to lease out.

Cool, new neighbors!
Interesting that the article says a vinyl shop is planned for the ground floor. I wonder if it's Spoonful looking to relocate, or inversely if Downtown really needs two vinyl shops?

“Vinyl Frontier” is the retail/entertainment brainchild of Justin Crockett, which will feature unique items for sale, live music performances, and a decorative theme that may scare small children. Justin is planning to have the shop open sometime in May or June, and we recently spoke with him for a Q&A session to find out more:
