There's a pretty good article and overall coverage from the Dispatch today about the 40th anniversary of the riots on the near east side. The slideshow is particularly interesting, especially when you compare those images with whats there today on Google streetview, or just a drive down Main St. The neighborhood never really did recover and its sad to see what's there today in comparison what was.

Yeah it's sad to see the negative effects that this had on OTE. Columbus is lucky in the sense that there weren't more riots and that they weren't more widespread as so many other places (particularly Detroit) experienced during that time period. These events are unbelievably destructive to a city beyond just the tragedy of lost life and property damage.

The thing I found disturbing was that reportedly Beasley was shot in the back and that Chesnut was subsequently acquitted.. Not sure how you shoot someone in the back in self defense..
