New housing for downtown is fine, but not everyone who works downtown can afford to pay 1000+ a month for rent. There are many lower level workers who commute downtown who would live there if they could afford it. Most of the new urban housing is designed for the upper class singles and empty nesters. What affordable housing that exists downtown consists of antique housing stock such as converted Victorians, often is bad shape, or apartments in crime-plagued Old Towne East. A vibrant downtown includes a wide mix of people and income levels. I hope Columbus can do better.
You are making sweeping and unfounded generalizations about the state of affairs downtown as well as its surrounding neighborhoods and I am personally offended by the suggestion that Olde Towne East is crime-plagued. I've had quite the different experience in my three years there.
