Ohioans think Gov. Ted Strickland has done a rotten job handling the economy and has not kept his campaign promises, and thus they're split on whether the Democrat deserves a second term, a new poll shows.

With the 2010 gubernatorial election now less than a year away, Republican challenger John Kasich has pulled into a tie with the governor at 40 percentage points.

As a progressive activist, I say, "Good luck, Ted."

I wore out a pair of shoes to keep Ken Blackwell from being governor. But not this time.

Ted has been balancing the budget on the backs of the working and middle class with cuts to the social safety net. It might as well be a Republican making all those cuts.

Ted hasn't done squat for progressive change. He's a failure converting us to renewable energy, a failure on the death penalty, a failure on civil rights for people who are gay, etc....

Is it unheard of (or even allowed) for Strickland to NOT go for a 2nd term and let the Democratic party put up a candidate that might have a chance in hell against Kasich?

I don't understand why anybody would want to be governor right now. Ohio's economy is dismal, it's going to stay dismal for quite some time, and then when your term is up you get scapegoated for presiding over a dismal economy. Who'll be next through the revolving door after Kasich?

Sure, I'd love for a viable progressive to face Strickland in the Democratic primary. It would probably have to be someone who can self-finance their campaign. Ted is Republican-lite and has the money flowing in from the big corporations and tycoons.

Phil Donahue or even Jerry Springer comes to mind to run against Ted. Then Ted could no longer take for granted his progressive left flank.

I'll probably take the apathetic route. I don't think I could stomach voting for Strickland and I'd barf on myself if I voted for Kasich. Both are an embarrassment to the state.

I'm just disappointed that he sat back and stayed so quiet during the Issue 3 campaign. By not fighting it (remember that anti-gambling pledge?) he lost my vote. I probably won't vote for anyone now. Maybe I'll write in Walker or something :)

I have to wonder what Strickland's popularity rating would be if the economy were booming and, other than choosing policies appropriate to a better economy, he'd done absolutely nothing differently.

+1 to the point on Issue 3 and writing in Walker. I'm also not too happy about the Nuclear plant that Strickland is supporting in Piketon. I can't be okay with Nuclear energy, especially when we the storage situation is still unsettled.

I know it means jobs down there, but the cons are too big to ignore.

I think we're going to see the most aggressive negative campaign in Ohio history against Kasich in 2010. TED has next to nothing to run on and if he's got one chance ... going negative 24/7.

The ODP/mainstream press/Nutroots and various other wings of the Democratic Party have got to be incredibly scared of a Kasich blowout in 2010. I think he's going to get between 54-58 percent of the vote.

We saw what happened in Virginia.

I like how when the state is in turmoil (and a Democrat is the freakin' Governor) the battle cry is "I don't know who would wanna be governor of this state!" Yet, when the state is in turmoil and there's a Republican in charge (that's what a governor does ... he's IN CHARGE) it's "WE NEED CHANGE!"

I'm an admitted conservative, I'll admit that but can anyone honestly say that they actually feel like Ted Strickland is either A.) in charge or B.) capable of taking charge?

Which is why it bothers me that the party is willing to just roll over when Ohio is so important on a national level. Could it be strategy? Get a Republican in there that won't do anything good either, make Ohioans bitter, and make it easier for Obama to take OH in 2012. Maybe we should shut our mouths. This could be BRILLIANT strategery. I'm just going to assume that's it, it makes me feel better.

And Walker, as long as 30% of the state doesn't get the same idea I think you'll be OK :)

I think you/we all talk tough about how we won't vote for someone a year out, we will inevitably pull the trigger for come election time with the excuse "he's better than the other guy." I don't know if it's better or worse than complete apathy, but from my experience it's almost every election when your party is the incumbent.

More voting Ohioans hate FoxNews than love it, so I think Kasich is going down hard. The reasons Ohio's economy stinks aren't fully the fault of any governor. Strickland has governed like a moderate Republican; I don't see how he can lose in this state.
