Joe Kovach, Coordinator of the OSU Integrated Pest Management Program , will discuss the design and management of an urban fruit and vegetable polyculture system that is economically viable and environmentally sound, and will also discuss his recent trip to Cuba, where organic urban agriculture is practiced out of necessity.
This program is one of a series on local food and agriculture co-sponsored by the Social Responsibility Initiative of the OSU College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Greater Columbus Foodshed Project of Simply Living.
Free and open to the public.
7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Room 103
OSU Kottman Hall ( 2121 Fyffe Rd.)
Parking will be available in the Kottman Hall parking lot. This Google Map shows the turn on Coffey Rd.

Dang it! I'm in Dayton till Wednesday! :( I would have liked to be there for the event.
I'm interested in keeping the bees buzzing. There's been really awful bee population decrease due to mites and other problems.. Are there any urban bee keepers out there in C-bus?? Or maybe raising lots of flowers that the bees like will help keep 'em buzzin'... :wink:

No beekeeping here, but Anne & I enjoy container gardening with several types of vegetables in the summer since we don't have a real area for a garden.
If anyone else is interested in growing your own veggies this summer, it sounds like this would be a good discussion tonight. We'll be there. 8)

Interesting presentation. I was hoping it would provide more information about how this type of urban gardening could be applied to our local communities here in Columbus, but was more of a research project on how the urban gardening technique practiced in Cuba could be maximized in every way (crop yield, profitability, labor, pest control, etc). Anyway, it left me thinking about some things, so I can't complain.
Will be interesting to see what other presentations come up in this ongoing series.

Meetings on locally and organically grown food to be held this spring

A growing food trend in recent years has been the increasing popularity of locally and organically grown products as health- and environment-conscience consumers want more of such products.
As a result, Ohio State University's Social Responsibility Initiative and the Greater Columbus Foodshed Project of Simply Living are hosting a series of free public discussions on local and alternative food systems in Ohio.
At least four meetings are scheduled in the next couple of months. Consumers and growers are encouraged to attend the meetings, said Sharp.
The next scheduled talk in the series will feature Phil Howard of Michigan State University, whose topic will be "Be Careful What You Wish For: The Mainstreaming of Organic Foods." The session is scheduled for March 27 at 7 p.m.
