Second showing Tuesday, Feb 23, 2010. Back by popular demand!

This Tuesday:
The New Metropolis
Tuesday, February 23, 2010
7.30pm
Drexel Theater
2254 E Main St
Bexley. Ohio

Due to popular demand we are rescreening this film

America’s “first” suburbs, those suburban communities built
next to America’s urban centers, were once the
birthplace of the American Dream. What are they now?

Ohio’s First Suburbs are highlighted in “The New Metropolis," a groundbreaking two-part
documentary on the rise, fall and revitalization of America’s first suburbs. Produced by
award-winning filmmaker Andrea Torrice, this is the first public examination devoted to
the issues facing many suburban towns.

Considered embodiments of the American dream, the first suburbs blossomed after
World War II, bolstered by economic prosperity and government support. Now, many
struggle with the same challenges as urban centers -- growing poverty, white flight,
crumbling infrastructure, abandonment and the continual lure of newer communities
further from the cities.

Admission is FREE, donations accepted.

It would be hugely helpful if everyone who saw the film (or any of the CIF+VF films) rate them on our bside site
I am planning on going. The topic sounds interesting.

What's the coincidence of sitting next to a first time poster on Columbus Underground? It was so nice to meet you and I look forward to your future posts.

This was a compelling documentary that I must say really opened my eyes on the adverse effects of urban sprawl. Ohio is coming to a crossroads in land development. It's time to not just build up rather than build out, but also to renew and maintain what's already been built and preserve our sacred farming land for future generations.

Although Andrea Torrice's movie has already been shown on WOSU, they will rebroadcast it sometime in the near future.

The New Metropolis has two parts. The first episode is called "Crack in the Pavement" and it's specifically focused on the first suburbs/ suburban sprawl in the Cincinnati metro area (present day). The second episode is called "The New Neighbors" and it's about the integration of one suburb called Pennsauken in New Jersey (circa 1990s).

For more information, check out the New Metropolis website:
http://www.thenewmetropolis.com/

CET in Cincinnati/Dayton area has been broadcasting this documentary for a couple weeks, but I'm not sure if Columbus has plans to follow suit. It actually played on WOSU in October, but I don't believe there are any future plans for broadcast at this point, but check the website for updates.

I believe the movie is focusing on the first suburbs circa 1890's. In Columbus these would be Old Town East, Victorian Village, Italian Village ect. These are also known as "Streetcar Suburbs."

i'm a little confused. is this about the first suburbs in america or the first suburbs in ohio? it seems to be focused around ohio and minnesota. i've watched a few docs on suburbs before and they all point to california and orange county for starting the trend of planned neighborhoods/subdivisions/suburbs/auto-centered living.

When I first read this, I thought Columbus may have gotten a mention in Metropolis....the magazine. We don't get enough articles in major publications......Newspapers, maybe, magazines, not so much. Anyways, sounds interesting and would love to go, but of course, as with all public meetings that I would love to attend, I've got to work. Hey, living downtown is not cheap.

Do you think this will be made available on any local stations any time soon?
