On another note not related to health care I have been reading more and more about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and I am thoroughly disgusted with our government. I love our country and absolutely hate the people who run it. :(

Perhaps that gets to a point from the survey back on page 1. There's lots of reasons to be angry at government regardless of the issue or which side a particular individual is on.

Saw that... that whole scene was repulsive. How can someone behave that way to a person who is clearly disabled? A stranger? A human?

That's rhetorical, right?

Yeah yeah... What that guy learned is how his behavior isn't in an isolation chamber. Tough lesson. (ETA: I have little to no sympathy for him, only for any family that lives at his same address.)
Also ETA: Mobs are scary.

Lots of people are scary. If anyone went out of their way to attack this guy or vandalize anything of his they would be no better than him. This shit with the health reform is a circus and only makes people appear even crazier.

Scary and dangerous: someone cut the gas line to a VA reps house...well, not HIS house, the home of his brother since THAT was the address a teabagger website published and then encouraged people to "drop by and say hi and express their thanks" in person.

Speaking of tea party protests...

The man who berated and tossed dollar bills at a man with Parkinson's disease during a health care protest last week says he is remorseful and scared.
"I snapped. I absolutely snapped and I can't explain it any other way," said Chris Reichert of Victorian Village, in a Dispatch interview.

In his first comments on an incident that went viral across the Internet and was repeatedly played on cable television news shows, Reichert said he is sorry about his confrontation with Robert A. Letcher, 60, of the North Side. Letcher, a former nuclear engineer who suffers from Parkinson's, was verbally attacked as he sat before anti-health care demonstrators in front of Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy's district office last week.

@rus - the quid pro quo crowd exists for every politician, but that desire is not indicative of a political spectrum, or ideology, and not why support noticeably tailed off on the left. That downward slope can be immediately traced to the coddling of the banking industry and then the seemingly endless giving away of the store for virtually nothing in political return over the health care debate. It was the left's coming back home that allowed healthcare to get passed, so if they're people disappointed that their gas tanks aren't full, my guess is it's independents who thought they were a post-partisan savior.
But, despite the right's drumbeat of negativity, I fully expect the polling numbers to go up on the bill pretty steadily over time, if for no other reason than all on opponents minus the Tea Partiers are jumping on board to get it implemented easily.
Insurance gets on board health reform bill
See, it's now in every major player's interest, save the Republicans, to have the bill be a success, if for no other reason than it's obviously self-serving financially and politically. If you think the Republicans can keep the animosity to the bill up by themselves without the corporate heavyweights backing them, you're seriously underestimating the extent to which corporate money played a role in dragging this out. My read on it is once the swamp is drained, the only people left in it will be the Tea Partiers and if they're entirely brain-dead politically, Repub leadership.

I'm not sure we're disagreeing on some points. If you want to call the "quid pro quo" crowd independents ( in effect ) I suppose that's arguable, depending on how you've defined the terms.

I'm more inclined to agree with Bear, though, on the long term popularity of this bill.

Also wondering how this will affect the Tea Party crowd; push them towards irrelevance or gain them more support? Will either of those cause them to radicalize further?

Doubt it'll continue on any sort of serious upward trajectory, or even last at this level. But I really doubt the popularity of health care will actually drop in the end.

I'm not sure. Immediate effects, from what I can tell, are minimal. I suspect some of the drop in Obama's popularity were from the "Obama will pay my mortgage and fill up my gas tank" crowd. When that didn't happen, they felt cheated. Not saying that's a reasonable expectation mind you... but kinda tough to deny that sentiment was out there.
How much of a factor that sentiment plays is the question, of course.

I'm not exactly sure what "crowd" you're referring to. If you're mistakenly referring to the segment of now lukewarm support for Obama on the left political spectrum, my suggestion is you might actually read plethora of left wing commentary that's readily available. You'll find not much of it has to do with mortgage payments and gas tanks. Otherwise, your opinion on internal divisions on the side of the political spectrum you don't inhabit is about as relevant as my opinion on why racists prefer Palin to Rommney (since I'm not a regular reader of stormfront).

This crowd:

The apparent left wing equivalent of this crowd:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKKKgua7wQk

Indeed. If you're willing to devote a chunk of your life to the country 24/7 that's worthy of respect; it shows a level of commitment most don't have.

As to being a pain in the ass, I was taught by the best. ;)

so one has to be trained to kill people or learn how to follow orders in order to demonstrate unequivocal love for one's country? interesting theory. I'll see your government service and raise you two congressional campaigns, countless letters with stamps, and a voting record (unlike Meg Whitman)

Personal bet? For a lot of the undecided, grudging acceptance. Almost a stockholm syndrome... we've got it, so it must be good.
Hardcores on both sides won't change.

Totally agreed on the movement -- the faithful have made up their minds -- though I suspect some far left, who have been holding out, Kucinich-style, for something more to their liking, may be settling for what they got. So I'm guessing there may be a little more pro on the left, but most of the movement should come in the middle.

Why that's happening, though, is the interesting question. "Stockholm syndrome" is one possibility; another is that some people just like to be on the winning side, regardless of what it is. Another, maybe some subset of the public have been reacting negatively to the tone of the debate rather than the substance of it. (shrug)

Doubt it'll continue on any sort of serious upward trajectory, or even last at this level. But I really doubt the popularity of health care will actually drop in the end.
